1st i want to apologize if i offend anyone... but i just have to say i hate fountains under cakes and stairs!!! omg it drives me nuts. I always watch WE channel , Bridezilla, Rich Bride Poor Bride... and i see people requesting these!! I mean everyone has their own unique taste and likes but i just needed to express it! again sorry this is only my opion
ME TOO! But its not my cake, its the bride's cake and we gotta do what they want.
(including HOT PINK and TEAL as the color of their wedding!)
I agree! I also dislike basket weave! Those things just look so dated to me! The stairs thing confuses me too. Why would a cake need stairs? Is it going somewhere? It would be different if there were little fondant figures on the stairs, or drowning in the fountain...at least that would give it a purpose!
I am a very visual person (as I am sure many of you are!) and all I can see is these little plastic figurines all drowning in the fountain, floating and bobbing, their little plastic hair sticking to their little plastic faces...
aw geez.... I forgot... Tuk-n-Ruffle.
I hate those kind of cutesy misspellings, too.... übertacky.
Why oh WHY do they still sell this junk? I've ALWAYS thought it was tacky.
RE: Fountain; stairs; etc. Okay, I HAVE the fountain (it was cheap and believe it or not we've used it...YUCK!) and recently a friend from church brought me the ENTIRE setup that she had at her wedding. Her mom made her cake (yes, in the 80's) and she thought I would enjoy them. It WAS nice of her to think of me. Oh yeah, I even have the BRIDESMAIDS and GROOMSMEN!
YIKES!

edited to add: No offense to anyone...just a matter of preference.
I want in on the stairs/fountain thing! Can someone post a pic of nice tacky example so I can have a chuckle and an eye roll too!
I havent read through the entire thread yet, but here is one I did a couple of weeks ago! (NO KIDDING!) I just hope the bride isnt reading this thread...
loriemoms.....that is too funny! Maybe you should put a lifeguard sitting on the edge of the fountain, just in case.
I can remember doing those cakes and the bridesmaid dresses were made from scraps of fabric used by the real bridesmaids.
Well, you did a nice job! Really, you did! I have those EXACT stairs and columns! LOL

is it just me or...
do brides always look beautiful and the grooms like they're sick to their stomachs/hung over?]
Thats why I won't post my wedding picture..I wasn't hung over..I was DRUNK.
i think this is beautiful! it doesn't look tacky at all..although i have seen ones from the 70s and early 80s that did lol... i love the fountain but it has to be done right i guess lol
I had a fountain with mine, but it was in the middle of the table, with the cakes on graduated individual pedestals in a horseshoe shape around it (clear as mud?) Oh, and candles too... I didn't think it was all that bad! I didn't design it AT ALL, I just had an offer from a lady in our church who was starting her business. She gave me a HECK of a deal, so I just let her have at it! I'll have to find a picture once I get home from the weekend...
BCJean, you just brought a big laugh to my face! I spent hours making those little skirts for the plastic bridesmaid dresses to match the real bridesmaids. Painted the little mens clothes to match the (2 toned) jackets! (I know---tacky, tacky) Long live polyester Everyones comments have been soooo funny. One time I had to put the men standing on the steps & usually used a dab of BC. Forgot to bring my repair kit but luckily found some Oreo cookies hidden in the church kitchen cabinets. OK, so I stole some took the centers out, rolled in small balls - instant glue! Another good reason not to use plastic men or steps.
I can't wait until I have time to read through this whole thread! It is hilarious! I also hate fountains. Especially the green ones I am just planning on telling people I don't own anything like that (odds are they will bring it to me though What then??
ohh love it!!! I SERIOUSLY THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE I AM SOOOO GLAD PEOPLE FEEL THE SAME WAY AND I LOVE HOW BIG THIS TOPIC GOT!! THANKS GIRLS!!! LOL
Too funny!
I actually tell people that I won't do certain things, flat out. It usually goes something like this:
<person, looking at my portfolio>"Wow! That's a _____!!! Can you make a _______???"
<Me> Well, I can do pretty much anything with cake, whatever you want!
<Person> Anything!? Really?
<Me>Well, I refuse to do fountains, stairs, and plastic bridesmaids...
I was thinking of mentioning it on my website at one point. Ya know, my biggest competitor (in terms of volume, not quality!) actually brought a cake to a wedding show.. with plastic bride/groom nasty nasty NASTY figurines on top. UGH!!
I hate the figurines. Can you tell?
LMAO!!!!!!!

OK, yesterday I suggested that we post our wedding pics. Some of you stepped right up and put them up immediately! Man, I love looking back and thinking how we thought that what we were doing was "timeless". LOL!!!!
I located my pics and scanned this one for your amusement. We were married in 1989. Lots of big hair. No fountain. No stairs. No fru-fru topper. And, sorry to disappoint, no wood paneling. Instead you see a metal building with latticework screening. I cropped out the A/C vent that was directly above the screen.
You wouldn't know it by looking at the picture, but we had more than 500 people show up at my reception. Not surprising around here because Cajun people love celebrations. I don't remember the wedding cake being a big decision and I SURELY didn't buy a cake to feed all my guests (300+ invitations mailed). If it weren't for all of our bouquets being placed on the table for the picture, that cake sure would have looked lonely on that big table!
Thanks! I'd love to have that 110-pound body back! We may have gotten fat, but we're still happy after 19 years!
Hey we're all still 110 pounds...underneath!!!
Y'know the flash in this photo gives you two guys a sweet radiant glow which is pretty cool.
I mean my photos never work to my advantage like that!!!

Happily married people gain weight .... that's my story and I'm sticking to it!

IndyDebi - I love your 'stories'!

Oh yes it is!!! A big-ass bow, bigger than my butt! Remember Madonna's "Material Girl" video with the red dress and the big bow? I think she was responsible for that trend!
The funny thing is that it was held in place by little snaps and the weight of the cathedral length train kept unsnapping it. We were kneeling in church (Catholic wedding) and my husband had to reattach the bow. In our wedding video you can clearly see him "speeching" me that it should have been sewn on. He had that "I told you so" look on his face. After 19 years, he still does the same thing (but I've learned to ignore him).

AMEN!
I just HAD to respond to this post. The first cake I posted on CC was this wedding cake for my son, done just over two years ago. I cracked up when I saw people writing about the tacky Tuk-n-Ruffle since I actually used this stuff! AND....the cake has a lovely backdrop of dark paneling. Off to hunt for my wedding cake pic!

Picture it.... June 1967, rural NW Ohio with the reception in the high school gym. Was the usual cake/punch, mints reception for that locale. 1 decorator in the entire county & she baked a wicked cake.... tasted quite like angel food likely with almond flavoring but texture was right between angel food & "regular from scratch" cake. The frosting was just divine & never tasted any like it since. Yes, the cake has sugar bells & sugar cherubs along with God knows what other embellishments. I honestly didn't care what the cake looked like as taste was more important to me. That fact can be proven by the topper as it looked nothing like my husband or me. Will admit that 41 years later we both still talk about how great that cake tasted & remember little else about it. Sorry the image isn't better but time takes it toll on those antique photos!
