I haven't used lifesavers but I have used tootsie rolls and starburst that can give that same look.
could you provide a link to this please? I'm not finding it on her site. These look cool and I'd like to try them.
any clear hard candy can be crushed up and melted like that. Usually you see that technique for windows on gingerbread houses and such.
KHalstead is right any hard candy just make sure you grease the bottom of the pan. Getting that stuff off isn't fun if it sticks. LOL
Do you just free hand the wings? Is the melted candy easy enough to control to do that? Or do you have to use something to mold the shape?
ditto KHalstead. I've done the crushed up candy, melted for gingerbread house windows. I can't imagine piping hot sugar, though.
Well, actually I can exactly imagine it and won't do it.
yeah piping it sounds dangerous
I'm wondering if they didn't just melt a pudle of it and use the back of a spoon or something to kind of manipulate it out into that shape. I mean butterflies are not a super complicated shape...it's kinda like a long tear drop for each wing. they are beautiful though!
Ahhh sugar is one of my favorite things to work with--Cover your ears ladies, but I might like working with sugar even more than cake lol... I was scared as ALL get out the first time I piped it (and have a few scars to show for it), but anyway, if you let the melted candy cool on a silpat till it's pliable, but you can handle it, you can shape those wings manually.
Here is the link, they are under the Cutest Cupcake Contest

Hopefully this works for ya.
Ok I'm confused Do you just spray a pan, set candies on the pan, bake until melted? How long does it usually take to melt?
I have used the crushed life saver (really any hard candy) method for years and years and years. When I was a kid, one of our favorite Christmas cookies was called, "Stained Glass Windows." You make a sugar cookie, cut out its center and fill it with crushed lifesavers which then melted into a stained glass effect. As well, I use it in gingerbread, and for water when I have the time to fool with it vs. piping gel.
Edited to add:
Crush the candy into small bits, use either foil or a silpat and allow crush candies to melt which only takes minutes. It's a "watch it 'til it happens" kind of thing... make sure all corners are filled so the melt is even. You can use cookie cutters as forms and fill them with a light layer of the crushed candy. Remove the cutter when the candy starts to set. Too soon and it will loose its shape.
www.Lorannoils.com has some really user friendly recipes.
Here's to get you to the list:

Then umm this is one of my favorites:

Now be real real careful with that stuff--dangerously hot hot hot!
Using crushed candy is easier, safer-- I mean you can make a mold out of the aluminum foil too. Sprinkle in candy, melt wa la.
Like 325 for a few minutes, maybe 5-7 minutes gets it melted something like that.
Here's one I did for my hubby's co-worker's daughter.
