I have used the crushed life saver (really any hard candy) method for years and years and years. When I was a kid, one of our favorite Christmas cookies was called, "Stained Glass Windows." You make a sugar cookie, cut out its center and fill it with crushed lifesavers which then melted into a stained glass effect. As well, I use it in gingerbread, and for water when I have the time to fool with it vs. piping gel.
Edited to add:
Crush the candy into small bits, use either foil or a silpat and allow crush candies to melt which only takes minutes. It's a "watch it 'til it happens" kind of thing... make sure all corners are filled so the melt is even. You can use cookie cutters as forms and fill them with a light layer of the crushed candy. Remove the cutter when the candy starts to set. Too soon and it will loose its shape.
