I haven't used lifesavers but I have used tootsie rolls and starburst that can give that same look.

any clear hard candy can be crushed up and melted like that. Usually you see that technique for windows on gingerbread houses and such.

KHalstead is right any hard candy just make sure you grease the bottom of the pan. Getting that stuff off isn't fun if it sticks. LOL icon_wink.gif

Do you just free hand the wings? Is the melted candy easy enough to control to do that? Or do you have to use something to mold the shape?

ditto KHalstead. I've done the crushed up candy, melted for gingerbread house windows. I can't imagine piping hot sugar, though.
Well, actually I can exactly imagine it and won't do it.

yeah piping it sounds dangerous
I'm wondering if they didn't just melt a pudle of it and use the back of a spoon or something to kind of manipulate it out into that shape. I mean butterflies are not a super complicated shape...it's kinda like a long tear drop for each wing. they are beautiful though!

Ahhh sugar is one of my favorite things to work with--Cover your ears ladies, but I might like working with sugar even more than cake lol... I was scared as ALL get out the first time I piped it (and have a few scars to show for it), but anyway, if you let the melted candy cool on a silpat till it's pliable, but you can handle it, you can shape those wings manually.

<---wonders if anyone uses REAL ingredients anymore--sugar fruit nuts, cream, butter etc--instead of flavoring chemical cream from a bucket with pudding & jello and calling it "mousse"
