Anyone know where I might find a stand like these? I'm hoping to find one for an October wedding. I've seen several of these in photos recently, and I'm hoping I don't have to make my own.

This first example is from Martha Stewart, and I can't remember where I nabbed the second one.

You just walk into a forest or your local woodpile and cut a large stump with a chainsaw, then you can use a spirit level and a sander to make sure it is perfectly flat. It's not that complicated, honestly.

I'm pretty sure there won't be a lot of stores around that sell stumps for home decor or cake stands. It's kind of something that's not in huge demand and simple enough to make your own.

Granted, if you don't have tools or aren't in an area with forests....I'm sure any local carpenter/woodworker would be able to provide you with one. Make sure to use the roundest one you can find with a diameter of about 14" or so. (It's really heavy!!)

If you just can't get your hands on one, you can also just use a silver plateau stand or even a styrofoam cake dummy and just wrap it in birch bark around the edges. That's a beautiful alternative and much lighter!

LOL actually I think this is funny also.. cause right before my dad died a man came and cut a large oak tree down... then sold the hunks for 50.00 a piece (they were maybe a ft. and 1/2 tall.

My sister did this for her wedding last July. That's exactly what she did. She cut down an Aspen in her backyard (she is in the mountains outside of Denver) and her hubby made sure it was level. That's all there is too it.

She also took a bunch of smaller aspens, cut them into logs, drilled about three holes in a row in each one, and dropped a votive candle in for centerpieces on the tables. The lady at the reception hall loved them so much that she bought them from my sister that night!

Speaking of walnut, my other sister just had a walnut tree in her backyard cut down and sold it! If anyone wants one, I have one in my backyard. Those nuts are driving me, well, nutty!!!

I love this idea! Do you need to coat the top with anything? I love the shiny loook. Could you varnish it so that you can wipe it off and resuse?

cut slice of log out.... sand... varnish ... voila

yep wipe down and reuse.. but where would ya store one without it causing a problem (ie bugs..etc?)

ALSO... you have to give these things a while to air out... because if there is bugs of some kind in it .. it would take a while for all of them to leave

Yah, my sister did it the day before her wedding, but then again she couldn't blame anyone but herself if she had an anty wedding cake. I hear they are good protein anyway.

I have an October bride who wanted that tree base, I told her to make it and have it at the reception site for me. She emailed me a few days ago and said her dad cut down a tree for her and she had the stand! I may try to buy it from her.

OMG. Laughing out loud. My BIL probably thinks I'm a nut. Had no interest in a log stand of my own. I'm sure glad I kept on reading anyway. You never know what random craziness will bust out in these threads!

My neice wanted tree stumps as her wedding cake stands. My brother got a friend to cut them....make sure your table will hold the extra weight. We used concrete blocks under for extra support.

It wasn't hard, really, just took more muscles than I have to lift them up onto the table!

We had a 'tree' as our wedding cake stand! We had cupcakes with fondant cala lillies on top of each one and the guy who did them for us had an amazing stand that he'd made himself. I'll try to post a pic but it was basically a log about 2-3 feet tall that he had screwed a flat base onto. He had then attached 'branches' at regular points up the sides and made flat plates on the ends out of log sections. There were little clusters of cupcakes on each log plate. We had a Christmas wedding and the florist covered it with ivy and calas to match my bouquet and the room decs. Everyone said it was the weirdest but most amazing cake they'd ever seen lol! We had a fruit cake at the bottom for cutting as well.
