There are so many things I have learned from Cake Central as I am sure is true of all of us but my most recent....I bought a piece of vinyl from the craft store for rolling out my fondant. What an amazing difference it has made! I used to have a work area covered in cornstarch and mmf covered in bits of it once laid on the cake. Well, NO MORE! IT doesnt stick to the vinyl and requires no crisco or cornstarch, not ot mention it allowed me to cover my first 16 inch round cake which I would never have been able to do prior! (Bottom tier) Thank you so much for all the great advice that keeps making my skills progress further!

My gosh, thank you! Those are individual grad caps with a name of each graduate on it so they could take it with them. They are actually just mmf and the mortarboards are wheat thins crackers covered in mmf, lol!

Wow! That's so weird because I was just thinking today about how to get my fondant to not stick without having to use crisco or cornstarch. I watch the pros roll out fondant without anything (or at least it looks that way), and I'm always so intrigued. Did you just use a vinyl tablecloth or something else? I have the Wilton mat, but it still sticks to that.

I too think that cake is AWESOME! LOVE the little caps!
Please tell more about the vinyl... I need a bigger mat by July 20th so I can make my 1st wedding cake... Is it like the clear vinyl table cloth that you can purchase by the foot?

The vinyl I have is the clear upholstery vinyl that you should be able to get at a fabric store. It does work well.

WOW! I absolutely love your cake. I would like to have a much larger area to work with as well and this solution sounds great. My question is how do you know the food safety of rolling out on the vinyl? Just wondering. So many allergies these days!

Hi and thank you so much everyone! I had so much fun doing this cake! The vinyl I am talking about is also the kind from the fabric store. They sell it on a roll by the yard like any other fabric. It was recommended to me that I get a pretty thick gauge I think it was 20 or higher if I remember correctly but not positive. When I brought it home I cut some smaller pieces and kept some very large. I washed them in hot soapy water and dried well before using. Got this advice from so many others and am thrilled with the result. The fondant sticks to it enough that you can lift the entire piece, hold it over the cake and lay in on the cake to smooth, then just peel back the vinyl and voila!!
