Ok, I have to admit, I haven't yet done a cake in fondant - but last week I helped a friend make decorations for a baby shower cake and I'm psyched to start working with it more. In the meantime, I have a cake to do this weekend, client requested whipped cream frosting. I would like to use fondant balloons and gifts as the decorations. Can I place the fondant decorations on this frosting? If so, is it ok to decorate the night before, or should I wait? I just don't want to make a mistake! If anybody could give me some good advice, that would be so great!

OK I may be wrong but...There is a lot of moisture in whipped cream frosting. That means it will seep into something with less moisture in it, which would be the fondant. The fondant will then start to soften so you wouldn't want to cover the entire cake in fondant. As for decorations, I suppose you could make your decorations in advance so they can completely dry and then place them onto the cake the day of.
