Making Store Bought Frosting Taste Home Made?

Hi guys!
I'm making a cake tomorrow and have bought the Duncan Hines 'Whipped Fluffy White' frosting to cover it with. I usually would make my own but I'm short on time for this one. After I had bought it I realised that 'whipped' might not be the best consistency to cover a cake smoothly with. I was thinking about beating it with a little corn syrup, powdered sugar and vanilla. Do you think that'll work ok?
Also, any tips on making it taste less store bought? I would add some butter but I need it pure white....

you can add clear butter extract and some clear vanilla extract......I find extracts are the best way to mask that "store bought" flavor it can have. Also adding some powdered sugar can help with consistency and make it almost crust a little to aid in getting a smoother finish
