can I do a cake mix extender without sour cream? I'm using a box, but need to make more batter. But I don't have sour cream. can I substitute it with anything else? no heavy cream either. it's a yellow box mix if that makes a difference.
THANKS! I'm trying to bake it tonight and the grocery stores are closed.
In alot of recipies it says 'sour cream or yoguart' as an ingredient so I spose plain yoguart is best but fruit flavoured could work depending on the flavour you want
Here is how you can make a substitution ina jiffy

Works great... Ive used it many a time with great results... box mix or scratch.
Good luck
Funny...I just did this TODAY!!!!!! But it was with a scratch Chocolate cake....so it should work for a boxed cake!
3 tbs of melted butter + enough buttermilk or sour milk to make a cup. If you don't have buttermilk, you can make SOUR MILK by using 1tbs white vinegar + enough milk to make 1 cup. Just make the sour milk FIRST, add the 3 tbs of butter to a glass/clear liquid measuring cup and fill with enough of the liquid to make 1 cup. Depending on how much you need just make it one cup at a time and measure it out accordingly...I do it all the time with my scratch cakes. Works like a charm. No need to rush out to the store!!
