That is so annoying! I haven't had a lot of adults do that, but I have a lot of kids come up and try to stick their fingers in the cake and their parents watch them do it and don't say a thing. I usually end up having to redirect them myself.

Maybe it was the dog that licked the icing off the cake in that gross, gross thread a while back. icon_lol.gif

My dh's friends would do it, without hesitation. We were at a private club in Philly with one of dh's high falutin' financial wizard friends, and a few others. (It was in the movie "Trading Places" with Dan Akroyd and Eddie Murphy. ) Anyway, there was a wedding reception in the ballroom, and the cake and guest book were out in the lobby for some reason. I'm sure the club had never had a problem with cakes being vandalized before, but a guy went up and stuck his fingers all in the icing, then they all proceeded to write obscene things in their guest book.

We read about this all the time, so it comes as no surprise.

Of course, there is going to be some idiot at almost every wedding who will stick their finger into the cake.

Some do it to taste the icing, but I think most do it out of spite - to see if they can get away with it.

Adults are more guilty of doing this than children are.

Sorry about the finger in the cake thing. If it's any consolation, it still looked beautiful.

My DIL freakin' ALWAYS scoops icing on my cakes, ALWAYS on top and ALWAYS in the front. I had no idea it was such a wide-spread problem. Somehow that doesn't help. It's still rude and I shall continue to tell her so. It's almost like she's jealous and this is her control thing. It really annoys me, though. I get worked up before going over there with a cake and I'm really afraid that my impulse to have the cake fly across her kitchen is going to take over.

Did you ever see the display wedding cakes at Wal-Mart? Loaded with fingerprints. I asked the bakery mgr at my local store about it, and she said that the cake was just put out two days ago, but that day, it looked like it was in a war zone.

She said everybody who goes up to it puts their finger into it because they think it's plaster or spackle piped on there.

Luckily no one has had the audacity to do that to any of my cakes. If they did, I don't care if it's a kid or not, I would go off. They would know that if they ever try to do it again, they would pull back a nub. I would be very ill at my kid if he were ever to do that.

It's just not right.

In my experience it usually an adult - occasionally a very small child.

The first cake I entered at out local fair was completely destroyed by prodding fingers and "pushing" on the loops of the fondant loopy bow.

So true, my 5 year old would'nt do it because he knows its a no-no but my 3 year would probably take a bite right out of it!

But on the other hand I was at the grocery store with my husband the other day and he kept touching the display cakes at the bakery "I want to see if they are real", even though he knew they were'nt and they were surrounded by DO NOT TOUCH signs!
But he also likes to play bumper -grocery carts with unsuspecting shoppers, I think he falls into the under 4 catagory!

Sorry someone poked your cake, you should find out who did it and poke them!
The cake is beautiful though, hole or no hole you did a great job!

some people.............I just wanted to say I went and looked at ALL the photos from that wedding. What a wonderful photographer they had!! Those pictures are gorgeous......I love that they're not all staged...you can really get a sense of the love between the couple and their families. So awesome! I also love that the photographer wasn't afraid to show them praying before the ceremony and all his sweet comments with the pictures about the bride and groom..........you really got a sense of who they are!! Awesome job!!


P.S. everyone knows that cake was flawless before the finger poke so don't stress!!! It does stink that you don't have a photo before that happened though.

I use to show sheep at the county fairs.... you would work hours getting their wool clean, carded, smoothed and clipped......and some adult would come along and ....."OH... isn't that soft" and poke their fingers all over your work.

Same thing......some people can't stand it, don't have a brain or consideration ......HAVE TO TOUCH.........

That would make me so mad, if one of my kids did that and I witnessed it I would march them over to the bride (or whoever's cake it is) and make them apologize, even if it was the 3 or 2 yr old. They will never learn right from wrong if you don't teach them!

Sorry but this made me laugh out loud, literally! I have to do a grooms cake next week for a family member and i just know some idiot in my husbands family is going to put there hands all over it, not to mention the moron who takes it upon themselves to "cut" the cake for everyone, at the last family wedding this guy hacked into the cake like he was choping wood, the bride(his sister) was steamed, to say the least.

Just make sure the groom's cake is cut by somebody who knows what they're doing. AT my sister's wedding the person in charge of cutting the groom's cake cut these massive pieces like it was a grid instead of one piece at a time and only like a dozen people even got any. The wedding cake actually got butchered as well. Some ignorant somebody didn't know to cut from the back the way you are supposed to and proceeded to take the cake layers apart, to really get at it.
