Meeting In Louisville? Anybody Interested?
Decorating By wgoat5 Updated 11 Oct 2008 , 12:02am by JanetBme
Yay! I'm glad we have a date! Yes, I'm planning on coming (you've got me on the list, lutie), and my real name is Tracy Hays from Lexington. I don't really know that I could do a demo on anything -- almost everything I've learned came from these boards! But I can definitely bring something! Maybe I'll try out a new recipe!
punkiin - I don't have a "real" business. I just bake for family, friends and occasionally get new customers through word of mouth. Where do you shop for your cake stuff? Michael's and now the new Hobby Lobby? Do you have a business? Yes, a cake meeting in Lexington would be fun, too!
Hey, Tracy! debrab and I are planning to ride together. If you want to hop in w/ us @ the 64/60 line you're welcome to. Right, debrab?
I think I'll be dragging along Saphie, who is also from my neck of the woods (WI) so add her to the list. My name is Lori and her name is Nancy.
Can't wait to see everyone, and we'll be working on something to demo or show in the meantime.
Thanks for organizing this!! I've learned so much from everyone here.
I can't wait to meet you all. Maybe this should become our new cake club with quarterly meetings.
UPDATED LIST FOR LOUISVILLE MEETING ON SEPTEMBER 06, 2006
..............................................................................................
Well, I am really trying to keep this current... Here is the list so far... please tell me if I missed someone... Some of you said "Yes" before I had a date of Saturday, September 6, 2008, but I assumed you would still be interested. Please tell me if I am in error with any of the names:

tippyad (Amanda Tipton)

This is a total of 21 so far... we are from Wisconsin, Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Tennessee, and Kentucky. Did I miss any state? It is not that far from Illinois, Missouri, West Virginia... so some of you from those states, please come. Louisville has nice hotels and many are located in the east end, which is pretty close to Campbell's Gourmet Cottage.
As far as demonstrations go, we have roses on a stick, weaving ribbon in a basket weave butter cream icing, and a Royal Icing Demo.
Each one of us can bring or do something. Those who are new could make some of the recipes on the web site for others to taste... example: Michele Foster's Fondant with different flavorings or different flavors of cake balls.
Let us make sure we sign up for something so we do not overlap.
Who has a really great camera and can take great pictures? That would be a great thing to have pictures made so we could post them for everyone.
I will be happy to coordinate everything, as my children are grown and I do not have that responsibility anymore.
We will not have to worry about how much it will cost until we get our final count. There should be a cut-off date for signing up (say June 30 or July 31). If it gets too large, then we will have to find another meeting place, so do not let that become a distraction for anyone. We want as many that can come to attend.
For those who will be doing demonstrations, it would be really helpful to all if you could bring written instructions on how you are doing your particular talent... if the copy cost is too much, we can all purchase a copy from you for whatever it cost you to copy each sheet. That seems fair, do you not agree?
Let us all put on our creative capes and come with great ideas to share. I am looking forward to this meeting of the "Cake Society of Creative Characters". I hope you all like to laugh because that is what I do the best!

I have a suggestion. When the final count comes in, why don't you set up a PayPal account just for this and we can each pay our portion that way, so you will have all the money up front for the event. You mentioned the costs of making the copies of instruction sheets....maybe if the people doing demos would figure up what those costs would be they could all be added together and included in what we pay to attend that day.
I'm so excited to get to meet everyone!
Please add me to the list.
Hopefully, gas prices will be down a bit in Sept....
(But I'm going to start skimming from the grocery budget now for my CC outing.)
CC Friends, good food and cake.....who could ask for more.

You've got me on the list too....I'm Cindy House (Punkiin) from Lancaster, KY. I can't wait to meet everyone.
Potatocakes - No I don't have a business either....just bake for family, friends, church family, and word of mouth. Yes, I'm a regular at Hobby Lobby and Michaels. Actually I've started buying a lot online (countrykitchensa and globalsugarart). The only thing you can find at HL & Michaels is the Wilton products and I have all those at this point.
Maybe we could get some locals to meet in Lexington quarterly or something. That would be fun...I know there are several from Richmond and Berea.
lutie- Since I am brand new to CC and do not have anything to "demo" I volunteer to do the pictures (if no one else has already).
Photography/Scrapbooking are my other hobbies that I have been doing for years!
Thanks,
LeAnn

Great idea about the PayPal account... I do have one already, but I think to put everyone's mind at ease, I will open a "special caker account" just for this momentous occasion. That way, I can get Susan @ Campbell's Gourmet Cottage her monies when she needs to have them (or another location if we get tons of more cakers). I will put a scanned copy of the monies transfer in a private email to each and every one of you when the time comes. Does that sound safe to everyone? Please advise.
How about this idea? Each of us could bring a small "gift" that has to do with our business of baking and caking (example: a special decorating tip, mold, or transfer, etc.) that is wrapped. Then we could do a "Secret (Fondant) Santa" game and see what we all end up with at the end of the day. We can set the criteria, such as: It should not cost more than $10.00 and no less than $1.00 or something like that... it will give each of us a small momento from our first meeting in Louisville.
What do you all think?
don't forget to sign me up. there will be me, my husband and between 2-3 more people coming with us.
we are so excited to get this together, meet everyone and learn some new things. (meeting indydebi - wow!)

Hi everyone ! I would love to be added to ! I too only make for family and friends... don't have much to offer, as I too learn alot from CC friends !
IndyDebi.... I'm in Greenwood, I'll carpool with ya!
Cheryl
Kids back to school !! woo hoo !
I am excited about this!! The fondant santa sounds fun!! I can't wait to see all the demonstrations. I don't really have anything to offer. I've been doing cakes awhile, but all your talent far outweighs mine.
Plus I have a "talking in front of people" phobia. Can't wait to meet you all.

We could get so big we would have to use the KY Exposition Center
Oh I am sooo excited to meet ya'll
I really like the idea of bring a little gift.. like a really early Christmas exchange about cakes
This is exciting!!!
I am sooo glad I started this thread!!!

Sorry, but my nights are spent thinking of things to do when we all get together. If we do get too large in numbers, I will contact one of the larger churches in Louisville and use one of their rooms.
Also, this idea came to me last night. Maybe we could bring another item and we could have a "silent auction"... something we are not using anymore or bought and never used, etc. in the cake decorating arena... (Some ideas that came to mind included: a small (ex: 10 x 8 ) piece of Plexiglass to freeze Butter Cream transfer onto a cake; homemade MF fondant; fondant cutters; homemade cookie cutter; a handmade KA appliance cover; a new rolling pin that has impressions; a picture album in which pictures of cakes could be placed; a special plastic container large enough to hold cake-fixing utensils when delivering a cake; pearl dust; homemade pearls; homemade gum paste flowers; etc......... you all can come up with much more. Let us share some ideas on this.
We could take all the money and use it as prizes (i.e. $ for lunch; $ for gas to get home; $ for shopping at Campbell's Gourmet Cottage; donating a portion of it to Meals on Wheels, the local food bank, or to Sullivan Culinary Institute in Louisville for a student's books... these are just ideas)
What do you all think?
Also, we could take some of the $$ and donate it to Cake Central... they really need help because it takes forever to get any place on the site.

Well............ Since you asked.... I love the gift exchange idea. I think we should leave it at that due to the expenses involved for everyone traveling, gas, hotels, meals, etc... I am more interested in keeping this affordable so more folks can attend.. The Church location would be ideal, as they usually have kitchen accomodations for anyone needing them for their demos, etc.... I am looking forward to meeting everyone~!
Very good idea Laura
And maybe Billie from Ba's can bring some great stuff for us to buy (Hint hint Billie )
Super! We need to get more ideas from you all. What do you expect to do when we meet?
1. We know that we will be seeing some demonstrations
2. Will there be need for refrigeration for anyone? That will make a difference in where we may meet.
3. Other needs (sinks, etc.) Try to keep it to a minimum, as some places will want to charge extra for kitchen use, etc.
4. You all are correct when saying it will be expensive for everyone to travel, etc. Let us just leave it to gift exchange and not try to do anything except the demonstrations and get to know each other. Then, down the road as our meetings become established (annually or every two years, etc.), we can start having vendors, etc. bring in items we might not be able to get in our own areas.
5. I need to get more sleep, instead of thinking of things to do.

Oh, Boy! We have 26 confirmed with a possibility of 2 more!
I have touched base with one of the organizers of this event to get their blessing on my idea.
If the event gets moved to a church or someplace where we have kitchen access with no add'l expense to us, I am volunteering to provide lunch for everyone (assuming it's a crowd of around 30 or 35 or so). And if that is ok with everyone.
I want to make this clear: I am DONATING lunch. (which means you have no say in style, flavor or design! That's the rule, right? ) But I promise more than sandwiches and potato salad!
It's one way I can repay all of the great help I've rec'd from CC'ers.
Ok with everyone?
That is way too much for one person to do... we know you love us all because you are so generous in your instruction and help to us, but you still have to travel a far way, too. This first time, let us all go to a restaurant and have someone wait on us for once. I am sure all of us wait on people at home, and this should be a time where we get to be the "waitee's" instead of the waiters. You are very kind to think of us, but there may be some who have dietary situations, etc. Actually, we should be waiting upon you for all the help you have given us!
I will check on Monday at one particular church I know that will be easy access for everyone. (Friday is the day most of the decision makers are gone from church, as it is their day off... my son is a pastor and that is one day not many decisions are made, generally speaking ) They have a meeting room directly across the hall from the kitchen which would be large enough for all of us. The location is very close to Campbell's Gourmet Cottage and to other shopping areas. What do you think?
