Okay, I've seen some really beautiful and colorful cakes that make think "wow I wish I was that good". Then I realize that let's say it's a 3 layer cake and one layer is striped (I'm guessing white fondant, with food coloring stripes painted on), one layer is wrapped in a huge fondant bow, and the third layer is dotted with different sized fondant circles and dots.

So, I look at this and think "once I can do fondant, I should be abe to do that cake". Basically, once I finish the third Wilton course.

For all of you that use fondant, how quick and easy is it? Using the cake layers I described (say a 14, 10, and 6 three tier cake, with stripes on bottom, bow in the middle and fondant circles and dots on the top layer), how long would it take you to decorate this cake?

I'm actually thinking that it might be quicker than buttercream to get a really nice look. Am I wrong?

I would say yes. The hardest part of working with fondant is getting it on the cake smoothly and without tearing. As for all the shapes and such, the sky is the limit.

I like the MMF recipe from this site - it tastes good enough to go on cookies! It's a b*tch to make - makes the arms strong, but I find it very nice to work with after it sits for a day or so. Just be sure to wrap the heck out of it. icon_smile.gif
