I had wanted to do something really special for my sons' Jr. recital. He's a trombone performance major in college. Needing a masculine cake idea, I pm'd Doug and we came up with a trombone case cake! I stressed, planned, fretted (and made Doug nuts with my pm's!). I baked and froze 8 half sheet cakes, which I knew was too much. I worked on the latches and buckles so they could dry. I ordered fondant and luster dust and prayed it would get here in time. I had edible images made of the program cover of the recital, a bumper sticker (he has them on all his cases) and some sheet music. This was hugely ambitious for me. I've made some nice cakes, but this was WAY more complicated than anything I'd done.
The cake took me 12 hours to ice and decorate. It had to be carried down a flight of stairs and make a 2 hour drive.
It was a huge success with all the music students and the professors at the recital. My son seemed delighted.
I just want to thank Doug and say another thank you to the CC membership for everything I've learned on this site! I never would have imagined 18 months ago that I'd even fantasize about making a cake like this!

Thanks all.....I was so sure I'd be posting about it in the Disaster forum! icon_lol.gif

Xstitcher.....I only used 6 of the cakes, and I carved out about 1/2 of the top layer to get the right shape of the case interior. Still, it was a whole lotta cake! The extra 2 sheet cakes went to work with the DH.

OMG! Awesome cake! I was a music major and attended lots of recitals and never saw a cake that was even close to being as awesome as this. I wish I could have seen it in person. GREAT JOB!

Well, no kisses, but I did get a public hug, which is a lot from my son! He was the most huggy/kissy little boy but he's very reserved now, especially in public. So, the very tight hug in front of all his friends surprised me!
I have pictures of the process of the cake here, if you wish to see:

Yep....the ex DH (Adam's dad) made the cake board. My DH is the one who covered it for me. My other son and DH carried it out (with me wringing my hands as they didn't keep it level carrying it down the stairs!). icon_lol.gif
