We are putting it into savings until we find a used Geo Metro. They get around 45mpg if they are running good, and our Explorer gets about 15mpg.

The way I understand it, it's an advance - you don't have to pay it back, it just comes out of next year's refund - I THINK.

Whatever, it's some extra money into my pocket right now icon_smile.gificon_smile.gificon_smile.gificon_smile.gif

OK, I found this on the IRS website...
"Q. Will the payment I receive in 2008 reduce my 2008 refund or increase the amount I owe for 2008?

A. No, the stimulus payment will not reduce your refund or increase the amount you owe when you file your 2008 return."

You only have to pay it back if your usual stimulus is larger then your 2008 tax return. I only found this out by reading on cnn.com and hearing about it on the news a few months ago and reading some money posts later on. Basically, I've heard both sides and prefer to lean on the safer side.

We are taking our kids to Disneyland with our check. Our son used to be non verbal and when we took him to Disneyland a couple of months ago, the words started flying out of him. I don't know if it was all of the kids, colours or stimuli but we are going to try and see if it will help him even more. Wish us luck!

I have heard conflicting info about paying it back, I have heard it will come out of next years tax return but IRS's website says that it is not going to come out of next years return... who knows! If it were an "advance" on next years refund then I don't think they would have included all the people who are not required to file a return. Either way, it doesn't hurt to have it now!

We are going to buy a couple Lazy Boy recliners for the living room so we can sit our happy hineys on them and eat cake! The rest will go into savings for a rainy day probably. We wont be blowing it all, more than half will be saved. Although... there are a few cake items I'd like to have.

I'm getting a convection oven and other business stuff because we're putting in my kitchen this year!! I've also understood from lots of reading on it that you don't pay back the stimulus payment. What kind of "stimulus" would it be if it was just a "loan" that you pay back with next year's tax refund? Also, it says if you become eligible this year, you can claim it as an extra credit on your next return, since you didn't get it this year. So that doesn't make it sound like you have to pay it back either.

i wont be buying much- because i got shafted all the way rond with this whole thing.
but the one thing that doesnt make sense is,
if you have a dependent who turned 17 or older in 2007 they do not qualify. WTF!
they are still your dependent, and you were able to claim them on your federal return!
and they dont qualify either!!! so basically older high school students and young college students do not qualify for the check, niether do their parents! not fair!!!
they should have gone by how your filed your federal return.
thanks for letting me vent..........!!!!!!

I'm buying a cupcake tower for a wedding I'm doing in August. I'd be buying it anyway stimulus $$ or not. The rest is going to finish remodeling a bathroom we added on to our addition last year.

Our gas in Halifax is $1.321 a litre. That would be $5.00 a gallon.

When I first heard about the stimulus check I thought it was an Urban Legend icon_lol.gif

Happy Spending to all of you. I am definitely jealous.

I guess if I find the time, I should post the official info on the stimulus check.

It is my understanding, after careful reading, that we will not have to pay it back.

Anyone have an official link for this? I'm on drugs today, so I'm leaving this up to a person who is more level headed. icon_smile.gif

mine is sitting in my bank account but not officially posting until Wednesday... hahahahah.... I thought we would get $1200 as a couple filing jointly and $300 per kid (we have 3) so $2100 but nope we got $1500, I did the calcualtor on the IRS site and it said the same thing, so for some reason we got the minimum payment for the couples of $600, couldn't be we made too much money cause we didn't... oh well, don't look a gift horse in the mouth. We are putting 1K in savings and buying plane tickets for my Step-son's for the summer. No cake stuff this time... DH bought my trip to Cake Camp for my birthday so I can't ask for Cake stuff for a while icon_smile.gif

Yikes...I think our currency is close in value too. Sure hurts the pocket book doesn't it.

The worse thing is that is only going to rise even more in the next few months.

All the talk of gas prices outside the US makes me feel better about the $4.19 it is here in So Cal. Thank goodness I drive a Mini Cooper so I get around 33 mi or so to the gallon.

I just wish I was getting one!! icon_cry.gif

My tax guy said when I filled this year that I wouldn't be. If I were getting one, it would be paying for my GSA order and my new purchase of a Coach Carly and Juicy bag.. icon_redface.gif I was a very bad girl..

Have fun shopping everyone!!
