I need some expert opinions regarding a cake I am making for the county fair. I have the baby grand piano mold (for chocolate or fondant)

My original idea was to mold the piano out of black fondant. The trick is the piano has to be black. I tried using the mmf but could not get it to take the color very well at all. Then I tried to just use the mmf and paint the piano black with the icing color (UGH) icon_cry.gif

Should I just make it out of the candy melts or try the fonant again? I am worried if I make it out of the candy melts, with the humidity here it might have a melt down. Not to mention, how do you make candy melts black? Maybe I should just by the Wilton fondant (if it comes in black)

Any help or suggestions you guys can make would be greatly appreciated. I need to get this piano molded so it can dry. My entry has to be to the judges by next Thursday...and I'm going to be out of town from Monday through Wednesday for my day job icon_mad.gif Help me MR WIZARD

Have you thought about trying gumpaste? It dries much harder than fondant ..

I just bought some gumpaste and the book for flowers. Can I paint that when it dries or do you mix the icing color in. I had a rough time getting the mmf to take the black color. It was awful

When did you add the coloring to the MMF? I always add it before the powdered sugar. When the MM and water are mixed together in that really soupy mixture. I have not had a problem getting dark colors when I mix it at this stage. Also start with brown, get a decent darker color, then add your black. It shouldn't take as much. I hope this helps.

Good Luck with your entry! Can't wait to see pictures.
