hi, someone had suggested a book for me on different way to use tips, it has a lot of borders in it also, it's called the wilton book the uses of the most popular decorating tips, also there is a lady on u-tube that show's 6 ways to use the number 17 tip, and there should be others there is a lot of info on there but i'm going to look at everyone's to
I love this thread ! because of this thread I did a new border on a cake today ... was kina nervous but I did it .. And there is sooooo many more I want to try ...YAY
Thank you for restarting it... Never knew it was there the first time ..... I'm glad I have it now saved !
'Tis the season for grad and brides, so it's time to bring this back to the surface for those of us struggling with ideas. Thanks for the all the links! I think I've finally found one for my cake this week.
Though some might think it old-fashioned, I like the Wilton triple-bead border. I think it looks really elegant! Here are the instructions from the 1990 yearbook: "Using tip 5, pipe a line of frosting around cake base. Pipe beads on the outer side of the line. Then pipe the second row next of cake. Add third row in line center."
I used it on both of these cakes:

Love it! I just saw a similar border in a 1970-something Wilton book, except the beads were off-set from one another. They called it a popcorn border. I'm doing a grad cake that has 3 school colors and the triple-bead border would be perfect to incorporate all 3 colors!
Awesome thread! I think I added a whole page to my favorites! And bookmarked some You Tube videos too! By the time I get to the bordering of a cake_ I am usually ready to be done with it-- thanks for reminding me that I'm not quite finished yet!
The other tip is to get yourself a copy of "the Wilton Way of Cake Decorating" Volume 3 - often called a complete Encyclopedia. It's out of print but often available on eBay. There are pages and pages of wonderful ideas in it on making flowers and borders.
I was just able to snag a used copy online for $28 -- I can hardly wait until it gets here!!!!! Thanks for the suggestion, Kakeladi!
Love this thread! As a newbie to the world of borders I really appreciate all the fantastic ideas. I saw this one a while ago and I love it. I think it looks great. I ice cupcakes with that tip all the time and I never thought to try something like that!

my favorite border is the one CAMBO does with the big open star tip, she makes a big border and then adds sprinkles sometimes... her borders are awesome!
Here is only a sample, she does many other looks too.. I am speaking of the pink border.

I tried too look at the photo link you posted, It said the specified photo no longer exist....
Oh Man, these are all awesome. where to start, lol. I see some new tips in my future.
Soooo glad this thread is here! I'm new to caking and am guilty of spending hours on fondant accents and models, then wonder why the cake still looks dull- it's because I always forget to border!!! Still very useless with piping, but I plan to get some cake dummys and get practising as it can make all the difference.
So many to try, so little time to try them!!
chelseak that is such a pretty border...what tip did you use
Oh I wish that was my cake! I believe the tip used was a 1M? It does look very pretty
Thanks to everyone for sharing there are some wonderful ideas on here!! Can't wait to experiment!!!
You just click on the dark pink link.

Okay, I'm adding this one that I just tried this morning. I LOVE it!!!!!! It's from the Wilton Way of Cake Decorating Volume 3 that cakelady recommended earlier in the thread. I bought it about a year ago now and can't quit looking at it! It has tons of great ideas.
Well, for some reason, the photo won't attach. So, hopefully this link will work!
