Spiral Staircase Cake Help Needed

I can't believe someone asked me to do a Spiral staircase cake. They want it to have 6 steps that wind around. The back doesn't have to be open. I haven't got a clue how to do this or if it can even be done.

If they dont' care if the back is open, you can stack square/rectangle cakes that are flush in back ... then just cut the fronts down to make the angled steps.

I'm not quite understanding, if I lined the backs up how would it spiral?

Sorry I forgot they want each step to be 2" high. So I know I need 6 layers of cake. I personally don't think it will look much like steps with the back not open, but I don't think that would be possible at all.

Ask Doug. He knows everything. He's my hero.

Gosh, I hope Doug pops in here. I can visualize it .....

It's kinda like if you set up square cakes that are slightly askew .. like in these pics:

only instead of setting the cakes askew, you'd have to cut away some of the front of the cake to create the spiraling steps.

Doug ... you're so much better at explaining these things!

I'm not sure I can be of much help, because my skills are pretty basic. But, when I did my piano keyboard cake I cut 2 spirals into the cakes. All I was going to offer was to make sure the cake is at least partially frozen. It made it much easier.

this may help...

you only need to bake FOUR (4) layers!!

then cut and stack as indicated in the diagram.

viola! a spiral, 6 step cake.... and cake balls too! (well that or your "baking fee" as in "what leftover cake?" -- mumbled w/ partially full mouth while brushing crumbs off mouth and clothes)

HTH

and FYI --- this took both MS Publisher and Excel to do -- Excel's chart function providing the little pie graphs!

wow! This sounds like a really large cake....you are definitely going to have to have a board for every 2 layers you have.... This would end up being like a 12-14" cake! icon_eek.gif you are definitely going to need a center dowel and I am thinking you would use round style cake instead of square.

I think you are going to have to do this topsy turvy style. Like the style cakes with the wedges in it instead of the whole cake being at a slant by carving it. I don't know how to explain it or where to go from there...yes, I too am thinking that you should PM Doug. He is the MASTER at construction! icon_wink.gificon_lol.gif

this sounds like a very large under taking! Good luck and please let us know how it goes! Direct Doug to the thread so that we can all see his idea! icon_twisted.gificon_lol.gif

I also did a spiraling cake. Let me know if this design is what you mean... all you would need to do is add stairs to the design, either by cutting into the cake to make the stairs or by adding gum paste stairs after.

I have some pictures that I took while I was sculpting the cake. Let me know if you want them.

Thanks Doug for all the work making the pie charts you are awesome and really quick too icon_smile.gif

Berecca - Your cake is sooo cute. I love it. I would love to know how you did it. pjayh20@gmail.com if you wouldn't mind sending the pics.

I will definitely post pics when it's done. It won't be until the end of May, but I wanted to start early on this design so I don't get behind the curve on this on.
