Was just wondering if anyone knows how you can cover your styrofoam so that it can be used again? hate to see good styro foam go to waste...thanks for your help...dawn
Most of us cover them as you would a real cake. The Styrofoam can be washed and re-used. Just let it sit for a couple of days after you wash it so it will dry completely. If you cover it with fondant or gumpaste use a thin layer of BC to make cleaning easier and keep the fondant from cracking as it dries. Also I'm going to try an experiment this week, I'm going to cover one with a thin layer of plaster and seal it with clear urethane so i can decorate, wipe and decorate again quickly. I'll let everyone know if it is worth it when I'm done!
Someone just posted yesterday that they just mist the styrofoam with water and then put the fondant over that and it works like a charm. Can't remember which member posted it, but that's what I read.
Some have also suggested wrapping the dummy with that brand of 'self-sealing plastic' and making sure there are no visible creases and then covering the dummy with either fondant or bc and that's suppose to work well too. I believe if you use a large amount of confect. (powdered) sugar and shortening - a receipe that crusts well - it can last a really long time on the dummy (possibly months or a year or so).
The best thing you can do is to rub some crisco on them and then just lay the fondant on. The crisco makes the fondant stick to the dummy and still allow you to reposition it if you need to. Water makes it stick a lot.. and you can't get it off easily (read at all) when you are done. With the crisco you can very easily peel the dried fondant off and re-use the dummies. It's easy.. not sticky.. and very user friendly.
same here, i just spray water onto the styro & cover them right away. no messy bc afterwards...
Doesn't the crisco make the fondant slip off? I need to cover a dummy too and didn't know where to start.
Most of my cakes in my photos are dummies as I'm building up a website. I cover my dummies with saran wrap and then dampen the saran wrap using a pastry brush. When I'm done with the dummy, the fondant and saran wrap just peel off.
I wanted to know if I have to do something to the border of the dummy (Styrofoam). Doesn't the fondant could brake on the borders? I am planning on doing my first dummy cake.
The first 4 cakes in my gallery I just did yesterday like jkalman said, used the crisco and it worked fine. I too needed some pics for a portfolio. I don't want to use other peoples stuff. Especially without permisson. I to was afraid but it went better than I thought. About a month ago I tried the saran wrap with the BC then the fondant that was a nightmare for me. Guess what works for one doesn't always for the other.
