Just curious if anyone has shipped a wedding cake before. How did you package? What shipping company did you use? Was a refridgerated truck or did you package with dry ice? Tell us your story.

I've never shipped a wedding cake before, but I did ship a birthday cake in February. If you click on the link in my sig line for Caked Alaska, you can see the before and after pics of the shipped cake plus read how I packed it. It did not arrive intact, although I can't complain, considering how far it had to go.

I read on here once of a lady who shipped a small tiered stacked wedding cake by USPS from like WA state to FL or somewhere, by (I think) freezing or chilling a fondant-covered cake, then wrapping it well in saran and/or bubble wrap, then putting it in a box and filling the whole thing with packing peanuts so it couldn't shift around in the box. Apparently it made it all the way to the wedding, but OMG I'd never try that! I can just picture the ways a box gets handled by USPS...upside down and backwards...

I know many high end bakers fly cakes--Sylvia Weinstock talks about flying boxed finished cakes all over the world as long as there's a nonstop flight to the destination, and some will send a "courier" along with it, but it's got to cost an arm and a leg.

I happened to watching the Food Network...can't remember the show but it was about cakes and Mike from Mike's Amazing cakes was on it. He ships cakes fully decorated all over the country. He placed a 3 or 4 tiered cake decorated like a mountain in a cardboard box with plastic windows all around it. I believe he ships it with the airlines counter to counter.

I did some research on the counter to counter service with Alaska Airlines because I had seen the show and I had a request for one of my cakes to be shipped to California.

I'm familiar with the "counter to counter" service as I use to be a ticket agent for Continental Airlines for 10 years but so much has changed since 911. It turns out in order to ship counter to counter you have to submit an application (which I did) to become an "approved or known shipper" and then once that is complete they send you a letter advising you to call so that they can come to your residence or business to verify the address. This process takes about 5-6 weeks.

Now, where the heck would you find a box like that? I'm thinking Mike has them custom made. I may try this and ship my sister a birthday cake to see how it arrives.

I knew Mike shipped cakes. I just can't get my mind around how that can possibly work! I guess it does though. Totally insane!
