Hi- new to this site, looking for any ideas for a army-type cake for my step-son's birthday. I'm trying to go for the 3-D look. I'm thinking about a truck....but I don't know. I'm pretty new to decorating, I only do it for special times. I don't like using sugarpaste or marzipan, tastes funny. Like using buttercream frosting. I would like to try to make a "marbled" appearance of green/black frosting for the outside. I picked out tin muffin cups for wheels, but just don't know how it will look. Any suggestions?
Thanks

Another 'army' thing you could create is a tank, to make the gun turret take a pretzel rod (remove the salt) and cover it with buttercream. Stack sheet cakes and carve away. Don't know how you would do the treads though? Maybe make indentations in the buttercream.
I don't know how old he is but you could do a sheet cake and make a diorama with plastic army men, tanks, etc.
I have a template with pics for a camo army tank. If it would help, please send me a pm so I can email to you.
I made one for my grandson on his birthday, I used a picture taken at his training graduation and placed it on top. To decorate/ice the cake I used the pattern and colors of his camuflage pants. So I colored the buttercream icing resembling the original ones and placed little chunks of icing here and there and then iced them together. The camouflage effect came out beautiful. If you prefer, you can ice/camouflage the cake and then place some plastic tanks, soldiers trees, rocks to resemble some action. You can look at my cake in this site under Birthdays/Theme/Military cakes. GOOD LUCk and let us see your cake!
Here is a link to a picture of a Military cake that I was thinking about making, mabey it will give you some ideas
