that Brides want the Lexus but only wants to pay for a Hyundai? I met with a bride today and we go over some pictures from books, off the web and pictures I had printed for her. She had no idea of what she wanted when I spoke to her on Thursday except she like cascading flowers. Ok, I think to myself, I can work with so I had all these pictures ready for her.

She arrives today with her fiance and I just knew from the introduction it wasn't going to be pretty. I show them the pictures and the books and you think she liked any of the pictures I showed her , noooo. She picks a three tier cake wrapped in fondant with fondant balls (alot of them). Oh I forgot to tell you the wedding is in two weeks. I am thinking it will take me days to make all those balls. Don't get me wrong its a pretty simple design but I have a full time job and two children
to deal with so I am so my time is limited. Oh and I have only been decorating since June.

SO we start talking price and I thought she was going to hit the roof? Then I find out she has never even been to a wedding? I am ready to throw in the towel. If I weren't doing this as a favor for a friend I would have sent her packing.
I got her to change the design to a much easier and we went with all buttercream to make it less expensive. Then she couldn't decide on what flavor cake she wanted. She told me " just pick a cake it will be fine" my reponse was
" I can't do that".
Finally we got through it. Almost two hours later I had a signed contract.
I just don't get it!
OH, and then there was the deposit on my cake stands, didn't budge on that one.
Thanks for listening to me vent. icon_cry.gif

well, looking at your photos, don't think you'll have trouble - except for the time thing.
I'll tell you what is frustrating, not having any orders icon_cry.gif Just did another freebie (my last post) that took a total of a day and half for me. But that's my problem...
I know others here that have been where you are will definitely have some words of wisdom for you thumbs_up.gif

Theresa I am trying t attach the pic but its telling me my pixels are to high so I am trying figure oyt how to change my pixels LOL. If I can't figure it out the picture is in the Wilton tiered cake book ( the one with the pretty pink cake on it) I think it is page 16. SHe wants to change it to buttercream with buttercream roses as the borders but using the same seperator plates and the ball stands. I hope that makes sense.

Mjs4492 thanks for the compliment. At first I didn't think I would get the orders either but be patient they are on the way! icon_biggrin.gif

If you have MSPaint in your computer, you can shrink it by:

file
open (open pic name)
Image
stretch/skew
stretch (enter percentage you want to shrink the pic, remember to do both horizontal and vertical equally)
ok
save as (if you want to keep the original the same size, then change the name to the new size by adding the percent - i.e. weddingcake50)

Faye,
I just did this same cake in Nov. for my sons wedding. His fiance (now wife) picked it out as soon as they were engaged and I didn't think I would like it. I didn't particularly care for the ball seperators. We didn't use them under the bottom layer. It turned out to be one of the prettiest cakes I think I have done. It was buttercream with the dotted swiss look and fresh flowers. Her colors were different shades of pink with white. I would post a pic but I haven't gotten up the nerve to try yet. Not to computer savy.

Theresa, I finally got it. Thanks for helping me. thumbs_up.gif

Cakeladydi- I agree it is a beautiful cake but she wanted it just like the picture but except she wanted three different colors and I was just nervouse that I couldn't get it all done. ANd then when I told her how much it would cost she was real quick to change her mind. I enjoy this so much and I hope one day I will get to do this cake but not this time. I will post pics once I do it.
Thanks
Faye

I'm sorry you had such a negative experience with that bride!
On another note, would u mind sharing steps on how to create that look?

I hate that people think cake shouldn't be costly. Like the bridal shower I had long been anticipating today- I'm sure they would have sent me packing if they'd been given a quote for $325. They would have gone to Costco.

It's true; people want to Lexus but won't budge to pay more than a Hyundai. Great analogy. thumbs_up.gif

ng, did you do the cake for the shower?

The cake in the picture is beautiful.

I had a couple that came for an appointment. I thought it was strange the man kept asking detailed questions about how I decorate.

Come to find out they did the same thing to my daughter, who is a wedding decorator.

I think they did their own wedding and found out from us how.

Learned my lesson. If I'm asked questions I'm just going to say "oh, I have my secrets" and change the subject.

Two week? Be sure to update us.

Wow, she is really asking for a lot, and at the last minute. This close to the wedding and she had no idea what she wanted? I'm glad you did not budge on your equipment rental.

I've had several last-minute brides in the last few months, and they've all been very ...how do we say... laid-back? The design is fine, the cost is fine, whatever. I'm sorry yours was a little princess. I always wonder about these people planning a wedding in 2 weeks. I did one with five days notice.

That's despicable. Good to know, though!

Good luck! I am excited to see a pic of the cake! At this point I wish I had a difficult bride. I haven't had an order for a while now! Things were so busy for me and now they have come to screaming hault! Oh well. Good luck!!!

I will post the picture of the cake in a couple of weeks. She told me she would recommend me to all her friends and family. I'm thinking to myself, that is fine but I am not doing it this cheap for them. From now on you want the Lexus you have to pay for the Lexus! icon_cool.gif
OH, The colors she chose is ivory for the top, yellow for the middle and green for the bottom. There will be roses around the bottom of each tier a darker shade than the cake and on the ball stands. I am sure it will look beautiful once I get it done. I hope I am not coming across as being selfish but she didn't want to pay for anything. Oh well I guess you learn from experience right!
Thanks for listening to me rattle on.

Will these be fresh roses and how will you put them on the cake? I understand that fresh flowers shouldn't touch the cake. I have my first wedding cake in April and I'm very nervious. I haven't gotten with the bride yet. Pam from Bama

Hi Pam from Bama, no these will be buttercream roses.
I am sure you will do fine with your cake. It is nerve racking though. The hardest part for me is delivery and set up so I pray alot.
WHat part of Alabama are you from?

I've used fresh flowers on my cake and I have yet to have someone get sick from them. <knock on wood> I just make sure to rinse them really good once I get them in. I won't put certain greenery on my cakes because I don't want the green stuff to get into the icing, like asparugus fern, that stuff can shed!

Faye, I'm from North AL, near Decatur. I was so excited the first couple of days after my friend asked me to make her daughters cake that I just floated on air. Her daughter hasn't decided on what style or look that she wants yet but I told my friend that she will need to keep it simple. It's for a small wedding so hopefully I'll be alright. I read so many posts on Bridezillas that I'm praying my first experiece will be a good one. I'm reading everything I can on wedding construction to prepare the best I can. Any advice you can give me will be greatly appreciated. You can PM if you want to. Pam from Bama

Pam,
I just looked at your pics and they are beautiful. I don't think you have anything to be nervous about. I love your tea-party cakes. I think you are very talented. I am from Ala too. Close to Mobile. I haven't noticed many folks on CC from this area. I'm looking forward to more of your pics.

Thanks for the compliments! I wish I knew someone up here in my area that does weddings that would let me watch a couple of times and be my mentor. I love using fondant accents on my cakes, thats my nitch and admit I haven't practiced my BC flowers or string work much since I completed all 3 Wilton classes. I've got some BC setting out from the fridge that I'm going to do some practice with this afternoon. Pam from Bama
