Do any of you have a booth for cookie favors at a farmers market? I am thinking of doing this in my area. If you do have a stand, does it make money and how many cookies do you make for it each week?

I do this yearly. i generally make anywhere from 12-20 dozen cookies per week packaged in boxes of 6. And yes I make decent money

I'm interested in hearing about this too. I'd love to give it a try. The obvious question that I have, do you need a "license" and does anybody even ask if you have one??

I've been wanted to do this too.
from what I've read in the IN Health codes. you do need a license and you should have the items labeled.
but, there is a women in town that sells stuff and it does not appear to me that she is licensed and she doesn't label her stuff (I'm hesitant to call her about this, I don't want to get either of us in trouble or irritate her...)

also for those that do make cookies or other items for the farmers market, what types to you do? decorated sugar, or more traditional flavored varieties?
what sells the best for you?

I think that I want to do decorated sugar cookies (indivually packaged), some basic chocolate chip, chocolate crinkles, etc (packed as 4 or 6) and maybe a few mini cakes...

would you folks recommend purchasing the stand spot for the whole season? or just try it out with one week to start?

I have checked with the city where the market takes place. They do require a license as well as the product to be produced in a licensed kitchen. They decide if you are able to participate based on how many other food vendors there are at that time. I guess they don't want too much of one thing. They also charge by the week and you can sign up for a yearly booth or a seasonal booth. I'm more inclined to do seasonal to see how it works out. It would be hard to commit to a year at this point with small children at home. You can only miss three weeks before you get kicked out.

I would only make decorated sugar cookie favors, individually packaged. My goal would basically be to show what I have and hopefully get calls for or take orders. I would of course have several favors to purchase there as well. But my main goal I guess would be future business. I would love for someone to see what a great product I offer, then think "Oh, I need to place an order for a birthday party, wedding, etc. coming up".

I don't have my license yet, but that's just a matter of going to the city and applying. I do have a place I can bake from that is licensed. But in order to use it I need to have my license first.

I'm just wondering if it's worth the time and money. I was walking through the farmers market a couple of weekends ago, and the entire time I was there I kept thinking that I could make a killing if I had a booth. It's in an upscale community and I think the majority of patrons could afford party favors. I guess I just need to bite the bullet and see how it goes.
