Hi,
I have just been asked to decorate a cake for our family fishfry on August 27. I have not a clue as to what to do. My daughter asks me to make a cake that "looks like Nemo" but the idea of Nemo at a fishfry is scary. My dh says to just decorate a 12x18 with "swirls and stuff". Don't you just love the way they describe all of the hard work we put into cakes. Any ideas?

The Nemo thing has me giggling. All I can think of is "fish are friends, not food." Can you tell I have little kids? I agree, it is just a little too creepy.

If it is a large family, like mine, I would probably just do a sheetcake with fun festive colors and write the name of the event and the date on it.

Don't forget all drains lead to the ocean! LOL my kids had a hard time with that one. We are on well and septic here so we had a hard time explaining not all drains lead to the ocean! Since you are at a fish fry why don't you make it look like what your plate may look like. A "Fish and Chips" plate and make it look like a paper plate holding it. I'm not so sure that was a good idea but i hope that it helps. The nemo thing may have an adverse effect for the younger ones. Good luck and post a pic.

Coletee Peters has an awesome looking fish on a platter cake in one of her books. If you don't have access to that, check in the current cake contest, I believe someone did the same cake.

I think I would make a fishing trip cake... a lake, maybe a waterfall, with pine trees, rocks/boulders, cattails & reeds. Maybe an antique fishing basket made out of fondant or chocolate and someone sitting on the bank holding a fishing pole.

For my DH's family fish fry I did the cake from Colette Peter's book. I did the fish on top of a 12X18 (the 12X18 was my 'platter') and I painted it to look like a perch, since it was a perch fish fry. It was the hit of the party. It was very easy to do as well, I highly recommend you try it!

I do have a picture of a perch in my pictures, but it was not the one I did for the party, this was a practice one.

Good luck!

I think a red & white checkered table cloth topped cake with watermelon or food on it would be cute.

maybe you could do a BCT of a fish fryer and add oil spilling out like water splash effect and add the end of a fish tail coming out the top..Just a thought!
