I am about to begin introducing myself to our new area. I am in the process of finding a commercial kitchen and getting licensed here. One of the ideas I have for my "introduction" is below.

Idea: I joined the local Moms club to meet new people for me and my children (1 in Elem school one in Pre-k). So the newletter this month asks for "moms that are trained in an area (chef, trainer, etc) to particpate in a Friday meeting, or write an article for the newsletter). So I thought a cake decorating siminar would be a grat idea.

Logistics: I would have a cake there nicely decorated. I thought I could draw names for a winner and they could take the cake home for their family. Then I would have a cake ready to simply decorate. Also, i would have mini cakes or cupcakes for the moms and kids to sample.

Another idea is to demonstrate cookie and how to decorate them. I could have some previously dried ones in various stages.

The question (yes there is a question here icon_rolleyes.gif ). What do you think would be the best things to highlight on in the "learning" portion of the session. What are the things that people would like to know so they can make a nice looking cake at home.

I am not really worried about teaching people how to do the cakes and losing business, because really, we all know if it is not a passion most people won't bother for whatever reason.

I received a lot of business from my moms club in MD so I know that this is a great way to start the "introductions", I am just not sure of the execution. I appreciate your imputs and suggestions on how I can make this work.

Happy New Year,

Julia

I think the moms club is a great idea. Your ideas are good to get your name out there. As far as the teaching aspect I would keep it simple and to the basics. Most moms don't have the time to really get into certain projects, so I would show them ways to make something creative without having to go out and buy a bunch of stuff to do it. Most have cake mixes, and canned icing on hand and of course the staples. Maybe you could show them a cute way to make a cupcake stand and cute cups, or just show how to ice a cake and use creative things to decorate with. Anyway just some ideas. Good luck on your club meeting.

Oh that's a great idea...what if I pass out a sheet with a recipe for an icing and cake you can make from a box and canned icing. I know recipes for both of those. I could also put on there some tips on leveling, baking, etc.

And of course my contact info when you jsut don't have the time! icon_biggrin.gif

Anymore ideas? Specifically what do you think a family baker would want to know and that would be easy to do in a short session.

Do you think cakes or cookies would be a better demonstration. What about a cookie bouquet class? i could do that in my sleep! icon_rolleyes.gif If I had them prebaked and iced with the base coat.

Thanks again

Julia

What a GREAT idea! I use to belong to a MOMS club in my area, then we started our own SAHMs Club. I sure do enjoy it. My brain doesn't feel like mush any more, and i have made some Wonderful friends. Your ideas are wonderful! i may "borrow" that idea from you. Something fun would be do do cupcakes and make animals or flowers or something out of it. And I really like the idea of the cookies. the bouquet idea is great. Good luck. I hope it all goes well. Something I've done with my SAHM's club: We meet once a month for BUNCO and I bring a dessert. This is a good way to try out new recipes, and I also bring them to bowling so the ladies can also try new things. I've gotten a regular customer or two from this.
Good Luck.

Think about how they can be creative with what they already have. Icing designs with a fork, easy border with Ziploc bags, using jam for filling, etc. If everyone wo wanted to brought in a cake they baked and a can or two of icing, you could show them how to decorate it. You would bring icing colors, toothpicks, baggies, scissors, and plastic forks. Those who didn't bring a cake could watch others do it, so it's voluntary but everyone can learn. A couple tubes of gel colors for writing would go over well, too, and sprinkles hide a lot of mistakes!
