Wilton's whipped icing mix

I bought the Wilton's whipped icing mix for the first time. I like whipped cream on my cakes but I have never been able to really do any decorating with it. I have yet to find a buttercream recipe that I like. I would LOVE to find one that tastes like whipped cream..anyway...Has anyone ever used the Wilton Whipped Icing Mix?? How does it compare to whipped cream? How hard is it to decorate with it? I'm doing a cake for my daughter's first birthday. I'm very new at this so I was planning on icing the cake white with a big pink flower (with yellow center) at the middle. I thought about piping the flower using a star tip.

Also, this may be a stupid question but since I'm an amateur I better ask. When I beat the whipped icing mix, do I ice the cake first and THEN take out enough icing to color it for the flower? I guess what I'm asking is, do I color the icing pink AFTER I ice the cake?

A friend tried it and said it was awful, which is pretty tipical of the Wilton brand. Something from a box is just not going to taste like the real thing. icon_lol.gif

I usually ice the cake first. Then if I have left over icing I tint it the colors I need, or make another batch if neccessary. You don't want to run out of frosting half way through icing your cake! Once you find a recipe you like and get used to making it, you'll be able to better guess at how much frosting you're going to use.

I've tried and used the Wilton Whipped Icing mix and I loved it. I guess it's all about personal preference. I don't like sweet icing's which is crazy because I ice all my cakes for other people using the buttercream recipe. I work full time and don't have the convinience of time to make from scratch. I wish I did. I agree with MGonzalez in coloring icing after you ice the cake. If your decorating the cake with the whipped icing - it pipes pretty good for general piping techniques - shell border, stars, and things like that. Intricate details - forget it. My family likes the taste of it as well - they aren't sweet icing lovers and this was very light in flavor and texture. To each his own - you'll get alot of yays and nays on this topic. I agree with BJ, I've used this several times and I like it. If you know what colors you are going to need, take out enough icing to color for the specific colors and ice your cake with the rest.

Ditto on the "love it." icon_smile.gif Wilton's canned icings and fondant are downright nasty, but I was very pleasantly surprised by the whipped icing mix. Now if only they'd price it more realistically!
