Well, I have the first batch finished and the second drying. I thought I'd post pictures of my procedure. Let me know what you think. I'm still trying to decide if I want to add eyes and a smile, so opinions are welcome.
First I flooded side 1, then piped hearts and edges. When dry to the touch I flipped them and repeated. I colored sections of spaghetti (for antennae) with black royal icing and let dry. Then I tried the mold suggestion with piping a body and inserting wings, but the body ended up squashed, so instead I inverting the procedure and put the cookies against an upside down v and piped bodies. Once the body was piped I stuck the antennae in and let dry.
Thanks nicoles-a-tryin and BarbaraK.
I did the color flow and details of the wings in two days. Side 1, dry about 12-18 hours, then side 2. Then I took a break (for Shabbos), about 30 hours or so and then piped bodies, adding the antennae. They are firm enough to move off the mold after about 12 hours, but definitely not completely dry. I expect it to be at least another 24 hours until totally dry.
They are favors for my daughter's Bat Mitzvah party on Sunday. Any opinions about putting on a face?
Thanks,
Kathi
Wow, those are really cute! I, too, would like to know about how long it took you? I'll have to try these. Great job! And thanks for letting us know how you did them!
tayesmama,
Well I thought my last posttold how long it took. Maybe you mean the actual color flow and piping. I would say 3 hours work each side for 53 sets of wings.
Does that help??
Kathi
Kathik, I think while I was typing my post, you had posted your answer to my question (Our posts were three minutes apart) heeheehee. Thank you for answering so quickly though!
Oh, and as for putting on a face, in my opinion, I think maybe a pair of eyes would look cute. But then again, I might try it with a full face and see if I like that. I'd say try it with a face and see what you think.
It sure is... LOL
It's not my cat, although it sure does look like one of mine (I have three) and I wouldn't put it past one of mine to do something like that. LOL
Those are really cute!!!! I would definately put eyes and a smile on. I think it would complete it. Can I use this idea? Didn't you say you were going to put them into a clear box? That would be adorable. I think that would be so sweet for a wedding favor.
Leslie
Those are unbelievable. What patience you must have. As far as the faces I kinda like them as they are, but if they're for kids a simple smiley face would be cute.
Thank you everyone. Yes, I am putting them in frosted mini take out boxes, cushioned in a little irridescent shred. I think they would be adorable as wedding favors. When I get them I'll post a photo of them inside. Please feel free to use these. I posted photos because someone in my original post wanted to make them for her daughter's birthday.
Just two notes I want to add:
1. I like the thinner ones better, they look more delicate, but are still sturdy. They are about 1/4 inch thick.
2. I want to thank AZrunner, 7yyrt, megankennedy, and especially bobwonderbuns for their suggestions in my original post asking for help. Your suggestions have been invaluable!
Thanks,
Kathi

Those are great! You have far more patience than I think I would have. I think they are perfect jus the way they are!

Thanks for the thanks kathi!!! Advice coming from someone who has never baked sugar cookies, used color flow, or royal icing! Lol...
