After 11years in business I am still learning and making changes... seems like every week I have a new idea as to how I will handle business.

Now, my question... am I alone? I took a long test that said I am an artist and summed up, I think with both sides of the brain. Sounds about right to me. Therefore the left side questions the right side. ouch! I know this sounds crazy to you serious minded atrists ( I am crazy!Huh!)

But according to the test people with artistic minds are suppose to be this way?

My real problem is making decisions and not changing those decisions. As it relates to designing cakes. It drives me crazy that I can't make a design that I am totally satisfied with. If I do the same design for an order again it will look different each time. Maybe that is actually unique.

So does everyone have this problem?

I call it being a perfectionism.

No matter how good something is it can always be better. I think I get it from my dad. He had several recipes that were wonderful, but not good enough. Or, he would have the recipe how he liked it, and 5 years later, see if he could make it better. I do that with my recipes and with my cakes. It is never good enough, because I know it can always be better.

So, yes I have that problem too. Sometimes good, sometimes just annoying....

This is the first time I have posted in this part of the forum as I don't have or intend to have a cake decorating business. I just saw this post on the opening page and when I read it I had to reply.
I am a life long artist of many mediums and rarely, very rarely ever do the same thing twice. Everything I create/make is done very much off the cuff and while I may lean back on an original idea, I seldom will "re-create" the original. People who have bought art pieces from me have always liked that, they know that the piece created for them is just that. There may be others with similarities, but that's as far as it goes.
I agree this is both a blessing and annoying. I guess I look at it as I hope the day never comes when I am completely satisfied with a piece and would never change it, because then I won't continue to learn.....and I love learning icon_smile.gif

MPC..we cannot do cookie cutter designs...I know that I cannot, everytime I do a design its slightly different...be it on purpose or just cos it turns out that way..

I enjoy that aspect greatly! because my customers get a ONE OF all the time.

and I advert as such..

"NO 2 DESIGNS ARE EVER THE SAME"...it's great especially when people are trying to "one up" each other!!

so don't fret..make it work..

new motto..lol

icon_lol.gif "You're one of a kind."

I can never do a cake exactly like one I did before or as it looks in a magazine or book; it's not how we're 'built'.

I'll use that, "you're one of a kind," sketch in the future MPC, thanks. thumbs_up.gif

Yep, I suffer from the same thing. I'm a perfectionist sugar artist. Everything I makes takes twice as long as everyone else because it has to be perfect AND, (in my mind) IT'S NEVER GOOD ENOUGH. I hate most everything I've ever made. You sound like a true sugar artist to me.

they don't call artists "tortured" for nothing.

i stress out every time i do a wedding cake...to the point where i hated it...

i bet i turned down 30+ wedding cakes last year...just because i was tired of the stress...

this past slow month i've had time to think....(God usually dries my brook up to get my atttention)...

i'm gonna take every wedding cake order that comes my way next year...

i just watched the duff marathon....and you know what? his cakes aren't perfect either!

I agree with you, I saw Duff's marathon too. I also saw him cover his imperfections. LOL I need to stop stressing so much also.

I think all of us that design or do anything that is creative becomes a constant challenge for our brains. Sometimes I will wake up in the middle of the night because an idea has hit me. If I draw an idea of a cake, many times I will end up altering it as I go. Sometimes it drives you crazy.

I watched it too!! It inspired me. He is not perfect, but they all did an awesome job on the cakes. And they had the same silly little mistakes and boo-boos that I did... What really caught my attention is that he buys commercial fondant, frosting and royal icing mix. And now I no longer feel bad using a cake mix. Maybe my designs will be good enough some day, that people won't even care what kind of cake is underneath it all.. He really inspired me for the new year!
