My worse...those bedroom shoes where you have a hard time telling the right from the left and, to top it off, they are the ankle ones icon_cry.gif

This is such a great topic--I love reading all the strange gifts people have received and have to wonder what people are thinking when they give them!!

moydear77, I completely understand where you are coming from.
My mother-in-law gave my husband (her son) and my 3 year old son the same thing she has given us every Christmas & for allof our birthdays - NOTHING!
Now, I don't need any more useless cr*p, but a card would be nice, especially for my son.
Funny thing is, she gives expensive gifts to some of her children & their families, but not others!
How can a mom play favorites?!?!
Thanks for letting me vent!

My mom does this!!!!!!!! She gave my littlest sister (24 years old) TWO Louis Vitton purses, but my sister didn't like them and you can't take them back, so my mom bought her a Coach purse ALSO.

I got a $150.00 gift certificate to Belk's (a dept store), which is nice and generous, but it's NOT 3 EXPENSIVE purses. And, I really can't complain because she gave another one of my little sisters (I have 3 altogether) a $24.96 box of dishes from Walmart.

What the (&%#( ?

My aunt sent me 2 pieces of awful jewelry. One is a broach (sp?) from a cruise she went on in barbados. It is hand made of fish scales and is a neon yellow. OMG yick. And a pair of cheap silver loop earrings that way a ton! Plus I don't wear earrings. Oh well I guess it is the thought that counts. At least I didn't get soap like my BIL. LOL

The worst thing I got this year was a violin shaped bottle of flavored olive oil . . . .but the giver also gave me a $100 dollar bill . . . which I promptly used to pay for my DH's surprise birthday dinner at a local restaurant! Easy come . . . easy go!!

A Buddha eye magnet for my refrigerator. My brother spent a month in and around Kathmandu this fall, actually it is rather interesting except I have a wood front on my refrigerator and stainless steel on every other appliance surface. There is absolutely no place in my kitchen to stick it.

derby, we call that the little sister syndrome! Talk to any number of people and I'm sure they will tell you story after story of how the youngest in their family usually seems to be "the favorite". It may be because they're the baby of the family. It may be because by the time the youngest was a teenager, the older siblings had moved out, the parents had more money and could "spoil" the baby a little more. Who knows? detective.gif All I know for sure is that it happens.

And not just at Christmas. icon_wink.gif

(oh and slippers like one person said, but i actually DID WANT them! LOL!) i couldnt help but think "doesnt he know what my new absolute favorite hobby is???"

wait , come to think of it, i suppose he did get me new cake supply toys...i could turn them things upside down use them for mini cake pedestals! thumbs_up.gif

The blanket the MIL gave was most likely free to her. I know my company gives things like that for Xmas.

Every year my husband and I spend Xmas at the neighbors house. It is a blast watching their family exchange gifts. They are such stupid gifts and everyone has to put on an act that they like it.

It's only my husband, two married children and a grandson. We buy for the Grandson. I told my kids last year that we shouldn't exchange gifts anymore. I could give you a long list of things that were never used but the giver usually goes into debt to get it. My kids haven't figured it out yet, but we make it up through the year.

My son needed a new kitchen floor we took him to the store and told him to pick out what kind of floor he wanted and paid for it, my daughter needed bedding and wall hangings for a bedroom, I had her pick it out and bought it for her.

I just couldn't stand thinking the kids are making ends meet and they have to put gifts on their charge. And to top it off when we want something we buy it so there's nothing for them to get. They were very happy and the don't exchanged with each other anymore.

Gift certificates are the worse. I didn't take the time to find out what I could get you, or take the time to shop for you, so here's a gift certificate. The funniest was when I was living at home. My mother would give her Mother-in-law $10 in a card and the Mother-in-law would give her $10 in a card.

I cannot complain about my gifts this year. However ... a couple of years back I was desperately trying to lose the 60lbs I had gained with my son's pregnancy (gestational diabetes (sp?)). Anyway I was super self conscious about my weight I had never gained that much weight. I went from a 115 to 175. Everyone knew I was extremely depressed by the weight gain. And I was trying really hard to lose it but it sure wasn't going anyway.

Well, my darling icon_evil.gif BIL and SIL (on hubby's side) decide to give me a medicine ball for xmas. If it wasn't bad enough that they gave me this stupid gift BIL made it appoint to 'show' me the proper way to use it in front of the entire family and guest! icon_cry.gificon_redface.gificon_mad.gif is exactly how I felt. Needless to say I was mortified and I just wanted to crawl under a rock. Everyone was shocked they thought it was truly disrespectful!

I ended up selling it at garage sale for $1 (brand new, never opened).

Hmmm I guess mine could have been worse, and I could have got nothing, but the in-laws gave both DH and I deodorant, toothpaste, and a toothbrush as three of our christmas gifts...which I promptly returned to Walmart. What's up w/ giving personal hygiene stuff for a present?!

I will give father-in-law some exlax, a plunger and toilet brush and for mother-in-law some fiber caplets, shampoo and hair dye icon_twisted.gif

They are always being cheap. I would rather get one gift that I have asked for, then receive alot of stuff that I will never use, or will return.

What's the point of asking for a list if you don't plan to buy anything off it anyways? icon_cool.gif

Well I can't top Naly's for sure, but figured I'd just add my own oddball gift anyway. I'm...shall we say... "estranged" from my mother, haven't seen her in over a year (big incident last Christmas, long story) but she furtively dropped Christmas gifts on my front porch on the 24th since she wanted to give presents to my 2-year-old daughter. She gave her a huge, expensive toy but since I'm on her #)@$ list she gave my husband and I a set of over a hundred hangers from the home shopping network. ??? She used to give us money but since we haven't been behaving up to her standards she sent this instead (she's always kind of used gifts/money as a behavioral barter system). I actually don't want her to give us gifts anymore anyway, but the reason it gets my goat is that last year she still gave us $ so I donated it all to a charity that is close to our family, in memory of my dad who'd recently died. After that, for the first time in over 20 years, she stopped giving me $$. It was like, she didn't want to give me anything I could donate to charity, even to honor my dad. What's a cancer charity going to do with a giant box of hangers??

On the bright side I got a really neat waffle iron from my MIL thumbs_up.gif

icon_lol.gificon_lol.gif That is too funny.

What I got was a nasty gram to myself and my daughter after I wished her a Merry Christmas and saying that I loved her, telling me to eat $hit and die. And to never contact her again. But hey, I figure that was actually a great gift to me.

holy cow. hangers? and you can't even return them, can you?

one of my dh's grandmas always gives bad gifts. one year it was a swag that she had gotten in her travels. But she had it on her own mantle for a year before she gave it away. didn't even bother to dust it first. She never forgets to leave the price tags on. Last year i got all mens cologne testers.
This year i got a hideous granny nightgown. it is SO going back to Walmart. They are always also playing favorites with my children. My second boy is their first "blood" great-grandchild. so they always make sure to give something way better to him than to my first son.Example: 2-year old gets a jeep power wheel. 4-year old gets a nerf football. He is still young, so he doesn't care yet, and they share their stuff, but the evil has to stop before his feelings get hurt.

These are too funny! What is with some of these gifts?

One year MIL for my bday (two weeks before Christmas) gave me Maybelline Mascara in blue... I don't wear blue... what do you say to that?!!?

Probably the worst gift I ever got, was when I was 9 years old. My grandma (who usually gave me great gifts) got me Tickle Deodorant and foot deodorant... Ummm... I was NINE!!! and not in puberty, so I think I gave it to my mom and dad! LOL

These are hilarious!! I think I might have heard a good one from a grade school chum that lives back east. She called to shoot the breeze and told me of a "gift" her girlfriends got her. She apperently had told them tha she was feeling a little lonely during the holiday's because her boyfriend was out of town. So.... They got together and hired a male stripper to show up at her house and do a dance. I guess he was dressed up as a reindeeer with the antlers and re light up nose in "an interesting" place. (use your imagination icon_wink.gif ) Anyway, if this wasn't bad enough she had company over for a lunch/dinner type meal two of which happened to be her parents!!! She was mortified. I was laughing so hard my eyes were watering and I got the hicups. OMG!!! some friends!!!

It should be illegal to give some of that gifts!!!
I really can't complaint, my in laws are the greatest they're always fair to everyone adults and kids, even with my 2 kids from a previous marriage, they are their grandkids for them. My DH always surprises me, this year he played with my mind and told me for a few days before christmas that he didn't know what to get me and he knew I was going to be dissapointed, well I wasn't, he got me four little boxes in one big box and all was jewelry that I wanted!!! I can really say that I got a bad present, but not getting one counts?? like two years ago my stepdaughter got presents for the whole family, I mean everybody, but me! icon_cry.gificon_cry.gificon_sad.gif , I was soooo sad because that same year I make sure that she got everything she wanted even a cell phone that my DH tought she didn't need and this year after 4 months that she doesn't talk to her dad, my DH (he's very sad) and the rest of the family, she sent a box with 2 presents for her dad, one for grandma and grandpa and one for uncle and auntie, needless to say that my two kids, me and her little sister didn't get anything icon_cry.gificon_cry.gificon_cry.gif I was sooooo sad because my 4 year old looks up to her and miss her a lot, how do you explain to a 4 year old that her 17 year old sister doesn't love her?? I guess I could deal with a bad present and at least if someone gives you a bad present the intention is what it counts, right??
Sorry I needed to vent about that, but to me that counts as a bad present... icon_sad.gificon_sad.gificon_cry.gificon_cry.gif

My MIL is famous for giving bizarre clothing to her sons and me at Christmas time. While she's a wonderfully sweet woman and I know her heart is 100% in the right place, and sadly the clothing is even of costly brands, somehow she still manages to come up with things that are completely off the wall. For example, this year she gave me what appears to look like a man's sweatervest that would perhaps have been worn 30 years ago. It's also a size like, extra large and would practically go down to my knees if I wore it. She said she wanted to get me something that would fit me since I was pregnant so she got a big size. Bless her heart, I guess she hasn't heard of maternity clothes. icon_rolleyes.gif

My MIL has become obsessed with framing things, that's what she does for graduations and weddings, she buys fabric, ribbon a $3 frame and frames the invitation. Those aren't too bad but this year she gave my husband and I 2 framed cards. icon_confused.gif These are Christmas cards but of the joke kind on a background of Christmas fabric, she wasn't just putting the cards in until I found something I wanted in the frame the cards are supposed to stay in forever and get hung on my wall.

My hubby's grandmother got me a porcelain doll that she got at Goodwill!! Her face was dirty and she had cigarette ashes on her clothes!! OMG! She got everyone something from 2nd hand stores or yardsales! She has money-go figure. Also, I told SIL that I could use bath towels (tried to keep prices down cause she is on limited budget) and she told everyone. I ended up with 25 or so bath towels!! LOL.

and you know,if I thought she really tried and just didn't have a clue it would be easier. But,I think she feels like she has to give me something and she just doesn't care.

This year I got a Hickory Farms Summer Sausage.Yuck! And sausage?Crazy.

One year she got me this horrible bright purple "fair isle" type sweater in a size x-large.I wear either a x-small or small. When I looked at it she just shrugged her shoulders and said,"they were out of the small sizes".Ok,so just don't get me one.lol.

Well I had a really great Christmas (because DH told me to shop for myself...so I knew every gift that I was getting). Anyway, my mom came over yesterday, she had been to the grocery store and they were having a huge sale so she pulls out box after box after boxes of butter, she says they were on sale for .65 and says she knew I could use them for baking cakes. That would have been fine but then I noticed that they are all SALTED butter! I didn't have the heart to tell her but now I have to find something to do with 10 boxes of salted butter.

this has been the funnest read in a while, i can relate to so many lol

this year was very interesting. first off, i've been wanting a certain corner cabinet with hutch for my kitchen since we built the house 2 years ago, i've had my heart set on it. one day i showed my mom and she printed it off and gave it to my grandma and she took the pic to her wood guy, HOWEVER, she decided that there wasn't enough glass in it and had him make a totally different cabinet. it's all glass from top to bottom. i wanted the wood doors to put all my cake books in so they were hidden. well, she didn't tell anyone she had changed this until it was done and my parents' went to pick it up to deliver it to me (dad has a big SUV it fit in) well, mom had told me the night before that they were picking it up so all morning i was in the kitchen cleaning and getting everything ready for my new cabinet. mom and dad showed up and mom comes running to the front door to warn me. it is so beautiful, however, not at all what i wanted. did i mention it's ALL glass? ok, so here's my problem, i have 2 kids of my own ages 8 and 4, AND i have a home day are with 4 other kids ranging in age from 7 months to 4 years. I DON"T WANT GLASS DOORS LOL
after i broke down and had a good cry my sweet wonderful husband comforted me and said we can move the cabinet into the upstairs living room where kids are not allowed and he's going to buy the cabinet and hutch that i wanted but i have to wait till tax time lol he's so sweet.
(and he wants all my cake books out of the way lol)
also, my fil and his girlfriend got us our annual sheets and comforter set, how can i complain about this? well, they ALWAYS get us king size bedding but we have a queen lol AND they do this every year (10 years in a row)
the comforter set this year is white, did i mention i have kids? and a cat? LOL i will take these back like i do every year, however, the closest Kohl's to us (until next year, we are getting one) is over an hour away so it's not like i can just run quickly and return it, i have to set a day where i can drive there and hopefully have something else to do while i'm in town since i drove over an hour to get there .
