Has anyone out there ever taken a Collette Peters cake decorating class?

If so would you recommend it?

She is coming to my area in Feb. and I'm considering it.

Thanks

The only class I took from her was at Cake Camp this year in Vegas. She is a WONDERFUL decorator but didn't seem like a good teacher.

I also heard this from everyone I know who took a class from her. I think she is such a good decorator and art is her passion. She thinks everyone should be able to see the idea and do it like she does.

The thing she would say over and over when asked to show how something was done was "Oh just do it however you think would look good".

She sat at the desk up front and never once got up to walk around the room to see how everyone was doing. There was no one on one at all.

Personally I won't take a class from her again. I think she would give a wonderful demo but as far as teaching I have had so much better.

Very interesting Joanne......but not so surprising I guess. She IS an artist....and the ability to teach is a completely seperate skill.

Johnny! Have you taken the basic Wilton courses????????

Even though I haven't taken a class from her, I would NEVER doubt JoanneK's opinion. Look at Toba vs. Colette's books. Toba is a great teacher and Colette is just not. . .

I said this on another post: Toba for instruction, Colette for inspiration.

I think it'd be fun to take a class with her. . .but I wouldn't call it a "class" really, but, au cont raire, a demo. I would go, but that's me. If you're on a budget and you're looking to learn by DOING, then it probably isn't the best opportunity. If you're not on a budget and looking to learn by SEEING, then go for it. thumbs_up.gif

Joanne, which class did you take at cake camp?

There was an Aide that was constantly circling the room helping the students in the classes I was in with Colette (5 of them). I agree, she is not a teacher, but will answer questions willingly. The students who were advanced had no problems. She is an inspiration though.

It was Piping piping and more piping. It was her last class of the night so maybe she was tired.

I do love her cakes and have several of her books. I'm also going on the Cake Cruise in 2007 where she will be doing demos and I'm sure it will be great.

I'm just saying I don't think she is the best. As a decorator she is one of the best in my eyes.

Cake Camp and the Cake cruise are sponsored by the Calif. Cake Club.

www.cacakeclub.org

They are every other year, cake camp this year, cake cruise next year, cake camp the year after that, etc. Lots of fun and classes at cake camp.
Anyone can go, you don't have to be a 3C's member.

JMHO I use her books for ideas and Toba for instructions. She was here in OK several years back and the feed back from her class was that she was not a "teacher" but a decorator. An insperation not an instructor.

I took a class from Colette in March and thought she was great. Of course this was the very first decorating class I have ever taken. (I also went to cake camp in Sept. and am going on the Cake Cruise. I highly recommend it.) The cake I made in her class is below. Definitely not my best work but I did learn a lot.

I haven't taken a class from Collete but, I got her book Cakes to Dream On for Christmas. The cakes are absolutely beautiful but the instructions leave alot to be desired. Some things just don't seem clear to me! Maybe I'm just not getting it?????

Thanks everyone for the insight.............................................................
Now I will have to rethink what to do icon_razz.gif
The class is 4 days long, you dont need any supplies and the cost is $760
I would have to close my shop for 3 days in order to take it icon_sad.gif

Phoov I have taken all the wilton classes.(I hated them)

Thanks everyone!

Where do you live? If I were you I would save the money and time for next year and go to Cake Camp. I would bet money she will be there and you can take a class from here there for much much less.

This is just a guess but I'm thinking you are talking about the class at the Notter school. If so, I am going in Feb. I was supposed to go to the last class, but a family emergency put it off. I've heard great things about it and I can't wait!

I'm not from Orlando, but I'll be there. There are some others here at Cc that have taken this class and really liked it. Even if she's not the greatest teacher of all time, I'm not passing up on having four days of one on one with one of the best in the field.
