It's DH bday next week & he's a sports NUT!
I want to make him a cake with a huge WOW factor because he's been so sweet & supportive of my cake stuff lately (among other reasons of course!).

I was thinking of making an 8" round base that would be a hockey puck & want to try stacking a mini football, golf ball and baseball on top.
I was going to use the mini egg pan & carve a little for the football & mini ball pan for the other 2. There's only going to be about 20 people here so I don't need a lot of cake.
I know I would have to dowel this but would I also have to put them on a cake board? If so, how can you put a cake board under a ball shaped cake?!
It would all most likely be in BC since he's not fond of fondant but if I had to cover them in fondant I'd be fine with that too.

Any ideas anyone??
Or any different ideas for a big WOW sports cake??
Thanks in advance for any help!

I cut out mellanine board, than wrap it in contact paper. Easier, sturdier. You would just have to figure where you want to put the dowel through and drill a hole. It may be too much for you. how about making mini tiers of different sports events? Or I saw this done on ACE of Cakes, using rice crispy treats in the shape of sports equipment and laying it in different places on one cake? That way you can use fondant to make it smooth, but still have the buttercream frosted cake. Just some thoughts.

I like the above suggestion. I would mold everything out of rice krispies or even fondant and just place them on the cake. And cover the actual cake with buttercream.

Good luck and post pictures when you make it.

You most definitely would not need to put boards under such little cakes for support. However, you may want a board just so they're easier to handle. You could pipe a little grass around the balls to cover any board that may be showing.

For the golf ball, I'd suggest getting the golf ball candy mold and making it out of chocolate or make it out of cake ball mixture.
