I am making a Lightning McQueen cake for a little boy I used to babysit. I was offered money but told them I couldn't accept because of the copyright. It would be my gift. It's the wilton McQueen stacked on top of a larger base cake (haven't determined the size). Anyway, it will probably serve at least 50. It's due Saturday, late afternoon.

She calls me yesterday to ask when I was baking the cake. She wants to come over Friday to see the cake. Okay...all I am thinking is if she doesn't like the cake, is she going to go to costco? She claims she's bored so I mention that she has a party to prepare for as well as a 6 wk old and 5 yr old. I also reminded her that since I babysit I wouldn't be finishing the cake until late Friday evening. That got her off my back. Wonder if she'll show up at 10 pm Fri?

Maybe she's excited but I can't help but think she wants to make sure the cake is "good enough".

She's probably just excited and wanted a "sneak preview", like seeing everyone else's Christmas gifts before they're wrapped.....since you know what they are, you are doubly excited to watch them open the gift. I wouldnt' think anything of it. I wouldnt' ENCOURAGE it ... .but I wouldnt' worry about it.

I'm with indydebi, she is probably just excited. I had some one ask if they could be in the kitchen the whole time I made their cake. (The most nervous cake decorating ever, I don't do good with an audience). People are amazed at the things decoraters do and most are just curious on how you do them. If you reallly think she is worried about your skills make sure to show her your portfolio and be honest and up front on your skill level and it should help ease her mind.

I make all my son's friends their birthday cakes as gifts and all the moms love to take a sneek-peek!
They are facinated with how someone can turn cake & icing into a hockey player or other design and think I am the greatest (good thing they don't know about this site and all the decorators that are actually wonderful!)
My best friend also likes to look at her son's cake in progress because she likes to help 'clean up' the scraps and leftover icing!

I agree with everyone else...she's just so excited about the cake she's about to pop!

I would take this as a compliment, whether you let her watch you work or not. Maybe she is interested in learning the tricks of the trade and wants to be one of us...

They are all right, she's excited about it. I had a friend who was so confident about her daughter's cake she didn't even question it. The Nemo cake or anything about the design, she knew I was making it and had no clue what it was going to look like or anything. After the party she hugged me and told me it was fantastic!

But be confident in yourself and your skill and no matter what, if they want to watch let them, truly people are amazed, I know my children and fiance' can never get enough of watching. It's like my latest halloween stacked skull cake I made. They couldn't belive the severed fingers looked so real. My daughter had to inspect my hands!

We have a talent that you should not hide until the finished product is there. Even if you mess up, they are amazed at how we can fix the slightest flaw.
