I had a friend who suggested to use cream cheese in a cake recipe to make something like a cheesecake. Has anyone done this and if so does it really taste like a cheesecake?

Never have heard of it. Couldn't hurt to try. I think there is a cream cheese flavoring I think it is at pastrychef.com not sure where I seen it good luck

Adding cream cheese to cake batter won't make a cheesecake.

However, cream cheese makes a rich moist cake.
My sister's fave is Kraft cream cheese pound cake:
