I'm doing a lightning mcqueen cake this weekend and would like advice on how I can get the fondant to look shiny. In the past after I've airbrushed, the cake looks like it has more of a matte finish. This cake is due Sunday, so any advice is appreciated!

If I want a shiny look, I use Crisco instead of cornstarch when I roll out the fondant. If it isn't shiny enough, take a little crisco and rub it between your palms, then gently rub your cake with it. Not so sure you can do that after you airbrush...I'm afraid it might smear color but I really don't know.

On the most recent wedding cake challenge, one of the decorators used a steaming machine, like you use for steaming clothes, on the groom's cake. It made it very shiny. Can't wait to try it myself.

If you hand paint the outside of the cake with gel colouring it will make the cake very shiny.

I agree with mgdqueen. That's how I did my Lightning McQueen cake just recently. Mostly it's in the smoothing, when you are rubbing the fondant to get rid of air bubbles and shape the cake.

I didn't have to add any extra Crisco to get the shine to show up, but I can imagine how shiny he would have been if I did.

Use marshmallow fondant, it always comes out shiny for me.
