icon_eek.gif Um. Hello. What are these people thinking? I made a huge haunted house for the cub scout halloween party, and do you know I had some ladies look at me and said, Well, how hard can it be, it's just some box cake mix and some icing? icon_cry.gif I worked a total of 45-48 hours on this thing. Granted my towers were not the greatest, but for crying out loud, what the f&^k did she expect. This thing fed 100 people! Then she freaked out when I told her if I made this to sell it, it would be around 300 dollars. She laughed and turned and walked away! icon_mad.gif The nerve of some people! the picture is in my photo's.

First off, great work on the cake!

And to the snarky lady....jealousy is an ugly thing, and I don't have much patience for rudeness either, come to think of it. Some people just get their kicks being thoughtless and rude. Don't give her a second thought.

It's a shame that people can't appreciate how much work goes into such a detailed cake. Just know that all of us here know!

Good Job, bet the boys loved it!!

Don't let people like that affect you - just consider ignorance as an illness - feel sorry for her!
Over the years you will, unfortunately, encounter many of the "it's just a cake" mentality. Notice that none of these people actually go out and try to make one!
Your castle is great - very clever! I loved the "Dead and Breakfast" sign. I might just borrow that and pin ot to the front door on Halloween, if that's ok! icon_wink.gif

So.. Have your vent (that's what we all do on CC!) and let it go. You are great, she is ignorant, end of story!

Exlax brownies!!! That's awesome! Just don't get them mixed up with the real ones.

Some people don't understand that you put your heart into a cake. Not just your time and some ingredients.

Oh, I SO agree! I was getting all ticked off just reading your post and that was BEFORE I looked at the cake! icon_mad.gif

You have great restraint. I probably would have smart-mouthed something along the lines of "oh most people like you, who have NO IDEA what they're talking about, seem to think everything is a walmart sheet cake! I guess that's why people like you pay people like me to create masterpieces like this!" (stand there and stare her down while smiling sweetly down my nose at her.)

(of course you have to remember that I tend to be a real bit** at times! icon_twisted.gif No really! It's true!! icon_surprised.gif )

How RUDE!! Unfortunatly I know how you feel. I've had the same thing said to me too & it hurt my feelings so bad. It was the first cake i did for an adult (most of my cakes are for my kids & nephews- just family-I don't sell )it was the baby cake in my photos...It was the first time I had ever made or used MMF and I was so proud and everyone liked it. except apparently one of the guests......she said in front of everyone that it looked easy to make and that it was just to round cakes & it was "no big deal!"
I wanted to cry!

I just looked through your photos and I love the haunted castle!!! You did an AWESOME job!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What I don't get (EVER) is WHY people think it is OK to be RUDE to another PERSON?

THat is not ok..

When did people stop teaching their children "If you don't have anything nice to say...don't say anything at all" ?

I would make that woman a cake of her very own - the one with the witch dead under the house - then promptly shove the cake in her face, and say "but it's just a box cake and some icing!!! It'll wash!! tapedshut.gif

Sign her up to make the cake next year icon_surprised.gif

I don't sell cakes, and have to say that is one of my biggest fears. I only make for family and friends. My mom is my biggest fan and she shows pics of my cakes to everyone - lol She is the one who has gotten the 'it's only cake' or "I could do that' kinda talk from people. Luckily I haven't had to listen to that nonsense myself, kinda discouraging. She called my grandmother the other day (who lives in another state)and was bragging, to which my grandmother replied, "I prefer store bought cake, why go to so much trouble for just cake" My grandma for goodness sake icon_eek.gif.

Your cakes are great... It's easy to let someone bring you down with their ignorance, but more fulfilling to know you are talented (and you are!) and that some people just don't get it.

What an awesome *haunted castle*.....those towers look just like they should for a haunted cake!

It is soooo hard to take comments like that from such rude people.
I once had a MOB rip me up one side and down the other for 'ruining' her DD's wedding because the trim was 'army green' instead of celery green. She had given me a paint sample and I matched it but she didn't think so. Talk about hurt feelings!
People see what they want to see.
Please be assured your creation was right on, great, and worth every minute of your time.

Oh geesh! And I bet ALL the guests were murmuring in disbelief that the green wasn't an EXACT shade match! How embarrassing! icon_eek.gif

I'm guessing you were joking but I've actually done that before, and let's just say that it backfired (no pun intended) - seriously I gave some guys in my high school class some exlax brownies, and boy did it smell the rest of the day...so I wouldn't suggest it.

To the OP - I probably would have gave a smart retort like "yes it's a boxed cake mix, and icing...and it baked itself and frosted itself too!"

I was just talking to my dh about how ignorant people are when they think "it's just cake and frosting". thumbsdown.gif

Yes, I've gotten a few of those comments too. And I commend you on your restraint. And great work...that cake is awesome!

I'm working on some comebacks ...no, I'll probably never use them!... though, feel free to add to the list!

"It's only a law degree...just a piece of paper."

"You're only waving some scissors around...it's just cutting hair."

"You only work 180 days a year...you're so lucky to be a teacher."

"It's only nailing some wood together. Anyone can build a house."

And on and on.

Why oh why can't people follow the "If you don't have anything nice to say" rule?

Sigh.

Actually when I was 15 I put a whole box (8pcs) of exlax in a cup of coffee that my Grandma was going to drink. I was so sick & tired of her coming to our house & complaining about my mom. My dad (her son) caught me, he told his dad( my grandpa). Later that night I got a call that it hadn't worked yet. icon_eek.gif
The trick is to put the exlax in the icing.
I am working on this "anger" issue. I don't think it's an issue, just don't make me angry. he he he he

People never cease to amaze me! I helped a friend of mine last year do an Italian Cream and Red Velvet Cake (FROM SCRATCH!! ) because her son had taken orders for them at his restaurant. His girlfriend had priced them to the customer (get THIS) for $12.00 each!! My friend went off on her and the girl's reply was...and I quote "Well, all you have to do is use a white cake mix to make that Italian Cream!" Hey....even a box cake mix cake (and I use them ALL time, except for the above which I enjoy making from scratch ONCE a year! LOL) takes MY time which is worth a heck of a lot more than $12.00!

Long story short...my friend told her son NO MORE CAKE FOR YOU! LOL

Don't give this rude woman another thought. Obviously...she didn't give any thought to YOUR feelings....now did she?

Beth in KY

PS NICE CAKE.....even if it IS only a box cake with some icing! The dragon is cute!

My ex did that to me once (only once mua ha ha teehee) back in the day. He said something to the effect that the picture I was drawing needed this that n the other thing. I promptly handed him the pencil n told him to do better if he could. He never tried to "correct" me anymore.
For people who think that cake is "just flour, sugar n water; they haven't a clue nor will any education on our part illuminate their closed up cave for a mind. They will just NEVER, EVER, EVER get it. So I would just smile, think horrid ways for them to meet their doom and go on with my life and well, we have a saying round these parts: Too bad, soo sad, sux to be them!!! So consider the source n don't let small minded people gitcha down.
