I was making oreo truffle snowmen with marshmallow hats (thanks to ccer's) and I've never really worked with candy melts before. The chocolate was not smooth at all! I had gloppy(sp?) hats.

I wasn't sure how to make the hats, but I put them on wax paper and piped red candy melts over it using the candy squirt bottles and piped a brim on them. The picture on here that I saw, the chocolate on the hat was so smooth and the brim uniform. Is there a better way to do this? What am I doing wrong?

Also is there anything besides chocolate that I could use to make features like faces, buttons or even scarfs? I tried RI, but it melted off b'c of condensation on the oreo truffles.

TIA

I add crisco to my chocolate when melting. It melts smoother and thinner. When you set the marshmallow on wax paper the chocolate will run down and make a puddle around it that is the rim. You need to have them on a stick to do this.

it's also possible that the candy melts over cooked. if you cook them, even a bit longer than they are supposed to, they burn and glob together and there is nothing to do but throw them out and start again. make sure if you're using the microwave to melt in short spurts on 1/2 power and stir real good inbetween - stiring well is essential to getting the melts smooth and creamy. thanks ya'll I kind of thought I might need to add crisco, but I didn't want to ruin anymore. Patticakes, what do you mean they need to be on a stick? can I just set them on the waxed paper and take them off when they harden?

thanks again
