My final order for the year is due tomorrow and what a disaster. I normally dont do BC cakes, but this customer - a friend of a friend - wanted nothing else. So I decided to do a FBCT as well since the instructions looks so easy Well this cake is def a Im gonna give her a huge discount and will stick to fondant in future.

how on earth do u get the icing smooth on a FBCT? I used a small piping bag to get the red and yellow between the black lines, but cant get it smooth on the bottom.
I think your cake looks great! If you're used to working only with fondant, that may be why you're disspointed with it! The only way to get smooth FBCT's and icing is practice, practice, practice! Yours is awesomeand hard to believe it's a first! Congrats!
Looks like a yummy bc cake to me!!
Why would you offer a huge discount to a customer that hasn't even complained about anything yet?????
I think the cake looks great. I wouldn't offer a discount unless the customer complains.
I agree with everyone else I think that the cake looks great and I also think the customer will be very happy with it. Don't even mention that D word unless the customer complains!
thanks quys. I must say evertime I look at it it looks a little better but the photo hides a lot of mistakes. Its the FBCT that Im most unhappy with Next time I'll get some advise from CC before attempting it again
Don't be so hard on yourself......your cake looks lovely. Just practice a bit more and it will be fine.
Me on the other hand has been starring at this pre mad fondant for days and just can't get myself do do a practice cake with it.....can't believe I'm this afraid of trying something.
I had the same problem when I did my fbct. I thought that my icing would be smooth too but when I put it on the cake it showed the lines. I used a fondant tool to smooth it down before it thawed. It worked ok but I thought mine looked oookey....You did a great job with the bc and the transfer for not working with it...
I, too, think you did a great job for a first fbct! Hope you didn't offer a discount. There's a method of how you squeeze the frosting in that helps to reduce the lines -- you have to sorta push the tip way down and squeeze so that the icing smooshes to the sides -- that's terrible description, but the best I can do right now. Then, I use a smaller angled spatula knife to go over the lined areas as soon as I take it out of the freezer -- hot water of course! I've even used a paint brust in hot water or a toothpick to get out some of the of the lines. You can also make the fbct to fit the entire top of the cake if it's a smaller one. Hope this helps, but I still think your cake looks awesome!

I think it looks fine also. Maybe next time you could ice witht the BC and make your design out of the fondant. If you are more comfortable with that meduim. Just a thought I usually do BC I have done fondant for classes but not any others. I want to do another fondant besides the boxed kind. I just haven't had time to experiment much. Maybe after the holidays I will have the time. Do give up on BC just keep practicing if you aren't comfortable with it yet. Good Luck
OK I dont see anything wrong with your cake.I love the colors,it looks yummy and the only thing I know is hard to work with is the black icing, because believe me it happens to me too.But with practice you can master it.You can also try to use fondant to make the decorations.I also started to hate buttercream but decided to practice more and its getting better. But fondant is still my favorite.Your cake is awesome, just keep practicing and good luck.
The cake looks great. I'm sure it's over and beyond what was expected.
For some reason when I take a picture flaws show up that you don't notice with the naked eye.
