My son's first birthday is next month, we are having him a pirate themed birthday party. For his smash cake he will have an individual loaf pan cake made to look like a pirate's chest. For the main cake I would like to go a little out of the norm and would like to make it look like a pirates map but don't know the best way to do it or if it's even a good idea to try...anyone have any suggestions?

That sounds like a great idea! You could make the dashed lines and have either a bct or 'drawings' of trees, rocks, etc.

Another idea would be to make the cake look like an island. You could have some cupcake or miniball pan hills, pretzel trees and candy rocks and still put a piped dashed line twisting around the cake to the treasure cake. Maybe some fondant or (if I were doing it) plastic people at the other side of the cake.

Gee, I am excited about the idea and it is not even my cake!!

When it came to me I just couldn't let it go..lol. The smash cake is what really got me. The island sounds good, I may end up going with that. For some reason I was thinking that a 9X13 cake with maybe a yellowish brown frosting and the dashed lines and some writing would not be too hard but I am at a loss and think it's going to be alot more work than I anticipated. I have tried to find some examples that I might be able to copy from but no such luck.
