I dont mean to sound ugly, but why go in to the business if its not your passion.

Was that directed towards me or the poster of the quoted material?

And how do you know if it's "your passion"????????

"strong amorous feeling or desire; love; ardor."

"a strong or extravagant fondness, enthusiasm, or desire for anything."

PASSION
Even though you are up late and still working on a cake you still feel the need to make it perfect.
When the thought of getting something new for your passion makes you giddy--Even if it is a pan!
The thought of having to make another cake can make one tired--But you still do it because it will bring joy to someone.

Everyone can get burned out but I cannot imagine a life without cake. I have gotten burned out.If you are truly good at something and you will open the fridge fifty times just to take another look at it I think it makes it all worth while!

don't know about you, but i like food and clothes for my children...thats why some of us go into business.

I had no idea what i wanted to do when i got into this business....the opportunity was there and I took it and for 9 years its been good. But sometimes people move on or decide thats not what they want to do. I used to love doing the cakes, but now i don't. I'm pursing a degree in criminal justice and I want to work in the legal field....will I hate it in 10 years....i dont know...ask me in 10 years. icon_rolleyes.gif

I really do not think this was meant to be spiteful or mean. What we write here is open for comment. We might not like the comments but I did not see this as mean.
I think we take things to heart and when someone mentions that they do not like cakes on a cake forum it turns on a light bulb in your head.

N, you have to make sure you make contingency (sp) plans. I know that I work a minimum of 15 hour days 7 days a week...I once spent 3 days working with 7 hours sleep.

I have made plans to take a long FRIDAY TO MONDAY weekend every 6 months to just lay about and do nothing. Thank goodness I live across the street from the beach!

Nothing is more relaxing than taking a nap on the beach drinking a margarita, or trying to read a good book fighting the seagulls fro your lunch...lol

I actually planned to go to Orlando for the ICES mid year meeting...lol

Oh for goodness sakes....YES I SAID IT ... i don't like cakes anymore....must be nice for everyone to stay doing something they like for the rest of their lives. I got into it when i was 19.....is it so abnormal that now that i'm 28 i want to do something else? And what i said was on a different thread in reference to what another poster said...

and thanks twinsy and kelleym icon_wink.gif It wasn't that i so much minded the question....just the snarky comments. Whats the point. icon_rolleyes.gif

ge978,

I wish you all the best in your new adventure! Sometimes our passions and dreams change and we have to go with the flow. I was a clay artist (potter) for years and just got burned out! Now I am into cake decorating and LOVE the creativity and the joy it gives people but will I be doing cakes in 5-10 years? I don't know - time will tell! Let's encourage and build one another up! There is enough negativity and harshness out there on planet earth and I'm sending you (((hugs))) and blessings! Best of luck, ge978!

I do understand your point though ge.. I have seen many different seasons in my life (I'm 43). From crafts where I turned a space in my house into a crafts shop (not for $$'s though just hobby), I've had that same space a recording studio (I've recorded one cd), then I took the big plunge for the bakeshop.

I appreciate your honesty, and maybe after you give cakes a rest for a while, you will find pleasure in doing it every now and then, just for fun!

I don't think this thread is mean either...some people just like to dissect every element of a post.

I think the poster just wants to know how you know this is what you're meant to do and used a past quote as an example of someone who doesn't want to do this anymore. What's the big deal??

ANYWAY....I haven't been doing this very long at all...haven't even crossed the one year mark yet, but I think it's normal to have a moment of questioning what you're doing. And I also think that we all need a break sometimes for sanity. Will I be doing this 10 years from now? I don't know, really. We all evolve. Sometimes toward an existing passion, or sometimes toward a new passion.

But if you're feeling burned out and need a moment to re-group, it happens. It doesn't necessarily mean you aren't meant for cake decorating...it might just mean you need a break. Keeps you sane. icon_smile.gif

Good luck on everyone's endeavors...cake related, or not!

Hee hee... guess why I'm here at CC? Because I'm 28 and I don't like paint. At 17 I started college with a chemistry major, and now I'm in R&D making industrial coatings. I used to love my job. Love love love. Now I just think it is stinky and dull. But I do it because I'm really good at it and it pays my bills. Until I get good at making cakes, I'll keep making paint - but you never know where life will take you!

I'm 56 and I've noticed that my likes and wants change just about evey 10 years. We evolve and move on. Some people are lucky to like the same thing year after year.

I am just getting into decorating and I love it, but if I had to do it every day for a living I think I would get burned out after a few years. In order to make money you have to work really hard and all the time (in any business) and if you have children it is twice as hard. People that are successfull at what they do, do not stay in the same thing year after year. They branch out and move on, they may keep a foothold on what they started with but they don't stay stuck in the same thing. I hope I'm making my self clear. Should have paid more attention in english class!!

GE good luck in criminal justice sounds exciting and about as far away from cakes as you can get. (diffrent kind of stress)

Ge, I didn't mean to attack you as others have implied that I did. I don't even think it's something to be ashamed to say (not liking cakes anymore) I actually commend you for having the . . . .to say what you think. Especially on a cake site! icon_lol.gif

Thank you for those who responded to my inquiry.

As for the rest of you, I was asking a question and used her statement as a quote. Perhaps it wasn't clear that I wasn't attacking her by never posting any words of attack. icon_evil.gif

And I will make my threads as I'd like. My post names are always related to the topic which I will be addressing, you just have to "solve" them, if you will. Sory it molested you sooooooo much.

I won't quit the cake business, but I would sell it in a heartbeat. And then order cakes from someone elses specialty shop. I don't want to learn any other business. I would be happier in the management part or the designer part, but put them together and I am running on a very low battery.
It would be good to have a back up decorator, but then I would be afraid my customers could tell the difference.

I wish I could wake up everyday excited about working, but I too want to cry because there are so many orders waiting for me. I am greatful for the success, but that is why I now say it is just a job. I definitely do still get excited over some of the designs.

It is a big feeling when you are loved by your customers. That is what keeps me going. Also being able to have discussions like these are great!

THere is a difference in having a couple of fun cake designs every weekend and getting slammed every week, all week long.

The passion may be there but some of the joy is gone.

I am sort of in the same boat as GE (maybe its just us 28 year olds...LOL)...I got into cake decorating so I would have SOME skill in doing my son's (and future children's) birthday cakes...and never intended it to be much more than that.....now I have people asking me to do cakes...and I know they mean well and probably think they are really helping me (since I am a SAHM)....but come on....for all the time (and mess) required to make a cake (and for all the disappointment when they dont turn out as planned) $5-$8 profit just inst worth it! I just dont seem to know how to say NO (and I have only been doing cakes less than 1 year)......but yet I still come on here to learn new stuff and check out all of you talented folks work!

Anyway best of luck to you all.....and for those of us not in LOVE with cake decorating....oh well!
