The thread on deposits inspired this question: what is your cancellation policy?
Mine: Cancellations made 30 days (or more) in advance receive a refund of any fees paid minus the deposit.
Any cancellation between 14 - 29 days in advance are charged 30% of the final balance.
Less than 14 days, the full balance is due.
Oh forgot to add, thank God I haven't had the need of one! Should write it in my contracts, smart move!
In my contract the cancellation policy is: if before 6 months full refund minus deposit. After that it is up to me and what products were purchased for the up coming wedding. 30 days before no refund unless death of bride or groom. Then the above applies as before.
mine is no refunds!
As a professional they are blocking off my time and I turn away other brides or business. That is lost revenue. I ask them if they are serious about the marriage or event and then explain if you cancel you have lost your money. If you are not sure then wait til the deadline to pay for your cake.
I implemented this policy after realizing some brides would book me and later have a friend willing to do the cake for free or minimal amount- they would want to cancel.
Well, I probe the cause for the cancel, they get mad and try to throw a fit to get their money back and of course you can easily read between the lines. Some have come right out and say I found someone cheaper. (I ain't Wal-Mart) I say "I'm sorry for the inconvenience but I am very serious about your order and I expected you to be also."
You have to be consistent with your decisions what ever they may be!

Mine is also NO REFUNDS! I clearly state it in my contract and to whomever is purchasing the cake.
Deposit of 50% at the time the order is placed. No refund if cancelled within 2 weeks of wedding. I retain 30% of the original 50% if the wedding is cancelled before that.
