I have another post on here about gumpaste but this is my current problem...
I made holly leaves yesterday and let them dry before I placed them on the cake last night. I put the cake in a plastic cake carrier and this morning the leaves are soft, like they were never dry. They still look OK, but I had put them on forms to get different effects and now most of them are flat. Is this simply b/c the gumpaste was touching the icing all night or b/c of the sealed container they were in? Would I have had better luck if the cake had been in just a box overnight?
Also, do people actually eat gumpaste or should they be told not to?
I dont put gumpaste items in a sealed container, it can def make them go soft over time, in this case I think it was a combo of the seale container and the icing (if it was BC)
I know of quite a few people that will actually eat the gumpaste items. Even saw someone munching a flower right of the wire stem . Personally I think they taste awfull. I just warn them about wire/toothpicks or glitter so they know and can make up their own minds.
Gumpaste needs a few days to airdry and the prefered method of storing IS a airtight plastic container.
If your decorated cake was a little cool, I think that maybe it gave off some condensation...that was absorbed by the sugar in your gumpaste decorations...being as the cake was placed in an airtight container, it had no place to go..except to be absorbed by your holly leaves.
Sorry that happened to you...but next time...maybe you can put your cake in a box...it works almost as well keeping stuff off your cake..
