I have the 12in wilton cake circle (not the cardboard rounds, the silver one for display) and was wondering if I should cover it with contact paper first to avoid any grease transferring to it....does anyone have experience with this?

I've put a cake directly on the silver display cake board and it was fine. No greasy transfer.
