Fondant/gumpaste is not very popular around here so I simply don't do them....
But, I'm making a cake that I would like to have gold on it....I thought of the luster dust.....but I wasn't sure if it could be put on buttercream....can anyone help me out??
Thanks!
I use luster with vodka painted onto my crusted buttercream. I have not had a problem with it. I sometimes have to give it two coats to get the sheen I want. I don't think I would try to paint the entire cake with luster though. It would probably get goopy on you by the time you were done.
I also mix it with vodka and paint it onto the buttercream. Be sure it's the crusting kind and you'll have to paint it a couple of times to get a nice coat. I find if I try to do thick coats I end up with splotchy patches, so I try to do 2 or 3 thinner coats.

I have added Wilton's pearl dust to my icing and then frosted a cake before and it gave it a nice "sparkly" look.
I didn't know you could paint with luster dust on BC!! I've only used it on gumpaste and fondant.
Thanks for this info!!!!

This link shows buttercream roses painted with dry luster dust. The roses are put into the freezer, then taken out, one at a time and dusted. They come out beautifully! I think the whole cake could be put in the freezer, then dusted. Because of the size, it would probably need to be put into the freezer several times until the whole cake is covered.
You can spray it on mixed with vodka.....mix 1 part lustre dust with 3 parts of alcohol and 1 few pinches of pearl will give you a pearly look. OR you can by lustre spray which I have...but make sure if anybody gets these to store them upside down or they will clog badly.....making it a waste of money if it gets clogged in the little tube. They make lustre airbrush stuff now

Does anyone worry about the fact that luster / pearl dust are not technically "edible"? I was reading about them and apparently they are considered edible in the UK but not in the USA, where they are only considered "non-toxic". I don't know if it's an important distinction, but I'm not sure I'd cover a cake with crayons or play dough, and aren't they both considered non-toxic but not edible? Just curious to see what you all think.
Thanks!
I worry about it and won't use them for anything that will be eaten. I agree with you, the dusts that aren't approved edible are no different than using anything else that isn't edible or approved for the use with food, yet non-toxic.

These are FDA approved dusts.
I don't worry about the edible part..The amount you put in a cake is very little and the pieces that people eat are not enough to make anyone sick...Plus not all cakes have the dusts..I do use it in my buttercream just as highlights on some designs...It needs to be crusted before appliying..I would never do it to a whole buttercream cake...
People really do eat worse things....pieces of metal off of your vegetable cans....nobody knows they are even there. BUT...there are FDA approved EDIBLE dusts out there just likeWhitting said.

Have a great day ya'll !
Add meringue powder to your BC so you get a crusty kind.. then you can cover BC with the luster dust.
