Hi all,

I have only 2 fabulous books on this subject and they are:

-The Whimsical Bakehouse - Liv and Kaye Hansen
-Kate's Cake Decorating, Techniques and Tips for Fun and Fancy Cakes Baked with Love. - Kate Sullivan

as for baking instruction books, I have:

"I'm Just Here for More Food - Baking" by Alton Brown

What other books do you guys suggest?

I could use some cake baking instruction book recommendations as well as fun cake decorating books. As you may guess by my 2 books listed above, I tend to lean towards the fun/modern styles of decorating.

I've heard alot of people mention the Cake Doctor or is it Cake Bible or Cake Mix Doctor books?

I love just searching online.

There are two books, the Cake Mix Doctor and the Cake Bible. The Cake Mix Doctor uses cakes from boxed mixes, where as the Cake Bible is all real cakes.

I want some Colette Peter's books though.

I have so many books it's not even believeable lol .. I have to say I love the CMD's book .. really easy to follow instructions and everything from a box mix that doesn't taste like it's from a box ...but you know what's even better?? coming here has almost been better than any book I have .. if you need an idea, just ask... if you need to know how to do something, just ask .. I learn something new everyday icon_biggrin.gif

I'm a newbie and I love The Cake Bible. I have not tried any recipes from The Simple Art of Baking, but it seems a good general reference book.

I am probably one of the few people on the cake boards who is unimpressed by the CMD. I have that book on loan from the library and the recipes pretty much just say to add a stick of butter and sub milk for water. There are also some of most popular 70's cakemix recipes. The Brides Cake that many people love is simply the Betty Crocker Butter White Cake Mix with milk instead of water. I would not buy it as you can ask on the boards about adding a box of pudding or sourcream to enhance cakemix.

happy baking

I LOVE Toba Garrett! I have both of her books - "The Well Decorated Cake" and her cookie book (the title escapes me right now). Her chocolate and yellow cakes are to die for. I just decorated five dozen cookies for a wedding using her icing recipes and they turned out wonderfully. Plus, her detailed instructions make even the most complicated stuff easy. I'm not big on using mixes so I've never tried the CMD.

Ambrosia,
The ones I have are the Cake Bible, The Well Decorated Cake, all 1986 - present Wilton yearbooks, and Fabulous Cake Decorating.
I have on order Kay's Decorating and Wedding Cakes you can Make.
I am mostly interested in BC, how do you compare Kay's to Whimsical Bakehouse? as far as how-to BC projects/ideas?
Would really appreciate your input.

Thanks, Naty

mjw15618,
I believe Toba's yellow cake recipe is an adaptation from the 1-2-3-4 cake. I have made the same but using evaporated milk instead of the whole milk, and separating the eggs. It comes out more moist. Also, I add a simple syrup. It really gives it a diferent texture. Just a thougt if you wanted to experiment.

I must ask, where are you purchasing your books? I have been to several "large" book stores near my home and my local library and they don't carry any! They have tons of cookbooks but not decorating books.

I know I can find some online to buy but I usually like to flip through the pages to see past the cover. Although this site is GREAT, I still LOVE to look at books and pictures.

They both explain how-tos and projects/ideas very well. I haven't tried any recipes from Kate's Cake Decorating yet. She only has 2 pages worth of recipes, as she uses the same ones that are tried and true for all her cakes. There's basically a yellow cake, a chocolate cake, a buttercream icing, a royal icing, and one or two other recipes. Her's is alot more in-depth on decorating. and the cakes are very nice. She explains it all very well.
Whimsical Bakehouse has a good mix of both recipes and how-tos for decorating. The Speckled Mocha Cake recipe in this book is TO DIE FOR. icon_smile.gif

Honestly, I would recommend both of them.

Rose. I had to call around to a few different Barnes and Noble bookstores and Borders Bookstores to find both of these books.

I like the Cake Doctor books, and anything by Debbie Brown or Collette Peters.
