Ok i am going to do 2 small whimsical-stye cakes for my 6 yr old twin nephews. One in Spongebob and one in Spiderman. I haven't begun to think about the Spiderman cake yet. Right now, I'm forming my plan for the Spongebob cake. Three-layer stacked and decorated with BC. The base will have green-tinted white chocolate transfers for seaweed and white chocolate (candy mold) shells. The border on each layer as well as the very top of the top layer will be white and blue streaked BC "whitecap waves." At the bottom and halfway up the bottom layer I will have Nilla Wafer crumbs for sand.

So here are my questions:

1) On the top of the cake, I want to have Spongebob (only his top half) floating in a lifesaver. Can I make this with MMF? Will it be strong enough? If not, what should I use?

2) Against the bottom layer, I want to make his pineapple house out of MMF and decorate with BC. Again, will the MMF work?

3) Since I only need to feed approx 25-30 people, I thought I would make the cake levels 8", 5", and 3" (remember there will be two of them). Will these sizes work? (keep in mind my sister required that they be whimsical-style cakes.)

4) And finally, these cakes are my gifts to the boys. But...just out of curiosity... if I were to charge a customer for theses cakes, what would you charge? (The spiderman cake will probably be just as detailed as Spongebob.)

Thank you everyone! Sorry this is so long, but I need to know these things and the party is Friday, August 13th. I don't have much time!

TIA!

I think MMF would work for your sponge bob and pineapple just fine. It sounds really cute. Can't wait to see the end result!

I have just one suggestion you might want to consider. I know my kids love to keep something off the cake. They have a spongebob figure you can buy and use that for the top layer....Just a thought, if not I am sure MMF would work. I can't wait to see the pictures, my sons LOVE spongebob!

I never would have thought to look in the fishing department for Spongebob! I may try that if we have it at our Wal-Mart here.

I don't have any advice as I am a super ameteur (sp?) cake maker, but my son's 2nd birthday party is also on Aug 13th and I am looking to make a SpongeBob cake. I can't wait to see your pics!

Too cute! Tell her I'll take any advice I can get! I have a new problem.....last night my sister said that I have an extra week to work on the cake, BUT.....she's buying the boys a $5000 tree house! So she wants to use that as the theme of the party! Now I have to abandon all my ideas and start over! Thank goodness I haven't started making the cakes yet!

So now...does anybody have any ideas for a treehouse theme whimsical cake? I am getting SOOOOOOOOOOOO frustrated.

Thanks for all your help on the Spongebob ideas! I might still make that cake for practice. I kinda like the idea....

Misdawn, I found this pic and thought it was cute .. it would give you an idea of where to maybe start .. hope it helps.. I'm not sure how you'd incorporate it into a whimsical cake, but if I find anymore, I'll post the links for you icon_smile.gif good luck! and remember, post the pics so we can see them!!

Hey ntertayneme, thanks for the link! I have a question though...she did hers with Rice Krispy treats and I'll be making it with cake. Wouldn't cake be too heavy to just make the trunk of the tree out of fondant like she did? Any suggestions on how I could make the trunk of the tree strong enough to hold up the "treehouse"? Also, how does it balance? I'm new to decorating, just did my first stacked cake. So I'm not really sure about the construction of the whole thing.

Hi Misdawn

Why don't you just use a regular sheet cake and either build a treehouse and place on top of cake or just make a BCT of a treehouse. Just a thought.

Good luck! can't wait to see the finish product.

hmmm maybe boards like on a treehouse going in different angles but on a slant like the whimsical cake? or boards like different levels of floors in a treehouse on top of each tier?? limbs or branches coming out the sides of each tier?? not sure how'd that work out though

Ntertayneme has a good idea. Could you make the tiers go from small at the bottom to big at the top like a tree trunk? Then, cover it in buttercream like a tree trunk with the top tier piped with branches and leaves and then on top of the top tier, have some kind of fondant tree house.

Just an idea.

that's a good idea too gdixon! Or just stack tiers upside down w/out it being whimsical in style...I'd be worried it'd crash! lol icon_surprised.gif

I was thinking about the whimsical style - You could do the traditional shape/stack style of the cakes, but have them covered in fondant. Then PAINT your design on the fondant....like: the ground at the bottom with a ladder going up at an angle - second tier: trunk of the tree with the bottom branches & still the ladder - top tier: tree branches & leaves very full with the last rung or two of the ladder....then make a tree house similar to that other one out of fondant with the "no girls allowed" sign as well....it could be "no parents allowed" or something else. You could tint the fondant first just barely with blue to resemble a "sky" background.

Just what came to my mind if she required whimsical.

If the cake is for boys, "No girls allowed" sign would be cute too icon_biggrin.gif

How about making the cake stand look like a tree and then doing your whimsical cake with stacked square cakes and making them look like 3 levels of a tree house.
I have a picture in my mind but I don't know how to put it into words wish you could see inside my head. (lol)
