My SIL asked me to make a dirty diaper cake for her friends baby shower. I thought I had heard this before, but when I do a search, I get lots of topics, but none about a diaper cake. I guess I'm not searching correctly. Can anyone help me or show a pic of a cake they made (if any). I just need some ideas to get me started. ANY help would be so appreciated!
I've never heard of a cake like that before, but at a baby shower once, we played a dirty diaper game that might give you a jumpstart to some ideas? There were construction paper diapers that were folded in such a way that you couldn't tell if there was anything inside the diaper or not, you know, sort of a pleat on the sides so that the paper diaper had some dimension. Everyone picked a diaper and the one that had the peanut cluster in it won a prize.

Why on earth would anyone want to make or order a dirty diaper cake? That's disgusting.
I agree it is gross. The requestor is not thinking about how the other guests might fell about eating 'poop'.
Sounds like a good waste of time and ingredients.
just cbecause someone ASKS doesn't mean we have to PRODUCE. May I just say . . . YECH!
what an awful request for someone to make of you
I thought it was gross too, but there are toilet and kitty litter cakes out there. And she is willing to pay. I talked to her today and asked if she was sure she wanted that and she said the pg woman does not like pastel and "cutesy" stuff, so that is what she wants.
Have to admit its not my cup of tea but if they are a paying customer and adament thats what they want they are paying for it so really whats the problem you dont have to eat it ...
I agree. If that is what the customer ordered then make it. Who are we to decide what kind of cake a person should have at THEIR event? With my two cents put in I am afraid I have nothing to offer but I look forward to seeing or reading ideas from all those CC'ers that have great imaginations!
ok I'm not sure how well I can get my thought from my head to here but I will try. How about taking a sheet cake and carving it to resemble an open diaper. Like when you open it before you put your baby in it...then adding fondant on the sides to resemble the "ruffles" of the diaper.... you know where you get all your protection from wetness like the commercials say Then take your brown frosting or... what ever little chunky things you would like to add to the Dirty part. I hope that sounds right and it helps.
P.S. I like it when I get a cake order thats not the "norm" You can only do so many pastel cakes with baby booties. And everyone ate the pee in my toilet cake just fine!
That sounds very unique!!! What I would do is to make it standing up, if you need a visual to get you started, get a diaper and cover a blown balloon so you can see the seams and such. Make the cake tall enough and carve it according to the visual, hallow out the inside a bit and place a variety of chocolate candies i.e. whoppers, twix, or the classic baby ruth from Caddy Shack, LOL> I love that with Bill Murray. Anyway, if you have any gaps between the candies you can always use chocolate buttercream.
Like everyone has said, she is a paying customer and even though people may not agree, her guests will understand because that is who she is, and they will probably enjoy it as well. Remember when they came out with the different colored ketchup? A little different, but at the end of the day it is still cake, kinda like the ketchup, different color, yet STILL ketchup. Good luck!!! Sincerely, Veronica
I disagree - gross. I wouldn't do it. I reserve the right to refuse service (or cake) to anyone if they want a cake that I personally do not agree with. Ugly design, ugly colors - no problem. But something that is gross or involves poop on a cake - no thanks. I disagree that just because a customer wants it, I HAVE to make it. They can go somewhere else. I do not want others to see a gross cake and ask, "who made the cake?" and have my name attached to it, sorry. That is just me and my preference and it is not meant to slight ANYONE that decides otherwise.
In fact, when I first joined CC, I noticed toilet and various other poop-type cakes when they were posted on the homepage - yuck. So I PM'd Heath and he (or he and Jackie) created a 'gross' category in the gallery...just for me!
It is a shame to me that some people not only have no sense of humor but those people wish to pass their uptightness to the rest of the world. What is so offensive about a dirty diaper or toilet cake? Please, I have three children, one just out of diapers and one still in diapers and last time I checked, we all poop and pee, so what is the big offense. I hope some of these people have no children at home or no TV for that matter if they are so easily offended. How many of you parents out there haven't laughed at first time expectant friends about the late nights and dirty diapers? I have been to several baby showers where we played the dirty diaper game, no one was OFFENDED by the game.
For goodness sakes !! These things are meant to make people laugh !!
I say use your creativeness and make a wonderfully gross dirty diaper cake and be proud of it. If your customer is happy then you have done your job. And I wouldn't worry about the guests at the shower turning their noses up at you because your name is attached to this particular cake, because I am sure if they are friends of the customer ordering the cake they will see it as lightheartedly as your customer.
Stepping off soap box !

Agreed, and if your guests are coming to your place, then wouldn't these guests already know what sense of humour you have. Maybe not their style but would find it appropriate for the style of person serving it.
Make sure you post a pic later.

It seems that a lot of ljdills' post refers specifically to mine, so I am chosing to comment on it. Please do not attempt to know whether or not I have a sense of humor. I don't know you, and you certainly don't know me. For the record, I have 3 kids too, and have dealt w/ plenty of poop and pee in my lifetime! I can laugh about any and all of it (and have, and still do), but I don't have to want to EAT or CREATE a replica of it! Same reason I don't like doing dog or animal cakes - I don't want to cut up (and eat) the family pet, ha ha.
Please don't take my comments as being "uptight" - I was really clear about stating that it was MY preference to chose what type of cakes I make, and I was only stating that - not attempting to convert anyone to my way of thinking! That's always been one of the many things about CC that I love - the ability to share all different viewpoints and perspectives, and be accepted regardless.
I think if you want to disagree, say so. But don't make comments that are personally directed at the poster you disagree with. It's not in keeping with the spirit of CC - again, my opinion.
First off, mistydm did not ask for our opinions on whether or not it is in good taste to make the cake. She just wanted ideas, though I think the advice she has received so far is good. You don't have to make any cake that you don't want to and this discussion may help others with the dilemma of "should I make the cake or not."
That said, I think it IS interesting to see everyone's reactions to the topic. This is one of those things that you either agree with or you don't 100 percent.
BUT
I don't think that just because some people (me included) think that poop on a cake is in very bad taste that we do not have a sense of humor or are uptight.
I don't like potty humor at all, in any situation, cake, movie, jokes or otherwise and I would never make a toilet cake or litter box cake. That is just my opinion...everyone is entitled to their opinion and it should be respected. Just because someone's ideas are different does not meant they are wrong.
I am very happy that I don't have to see these types of cakes on the front page of CC. Thanks arosstx. I would probably stop coming here if I did and that's the honest truth.
I hope you find what you are looking for mistydm and thanks for opening an interesting discussion.
ok instead of doing the diaper open, maybe you can make it closed and rolled up (just like you do real dirty diapers) with the area around the legs brownish and maybe a little bit of leakage( i know gross) on the cake board, you can even make some fondant wipes to put next to it , and a tube of diaper cream. its kind of gross but i would love the oppurtunity to do something crazy like that. i think the nastier you make it the funnier it would be! if i saw a realistic dirty diaper cake i would crack up, because i have been there done that a million times and to see it immortalized in cake would be a hoot.
Heck I had a friend who had trouble eating my taco salad cake cause she kept expecting beans! I know she would go running from the room for a diaper shaped cake! I couldn't eat this one either! I love the diaper game at showers where you partially melt different candy bars in a diaper and everybody has to name them by smell or sight. It is hilarious! But that same friend had to leave the room! So funny!
That being said..... I wouldn't do a cake shaped like private parts either! And some people love them too!
Here are some plain diaper cakes that I found:

Here is one that looks like a box of diapers.

this would be cute instead or maybe even a stack of new diapers!
To me the comment about being uptight is a badge of honor. It really means you're decent. Everything goes, so everything decent is gone. No decorum anymore. Let's bring bacl civility. Shall we?

I like JennieB's idea but do cakeballs with chocolate syrup and candies in the middle. Maybe some crushed oreos or chips ahoy.
Oh, and when you get it made, definitely update this post so I can check out the picture.
Now I don't usually post comments but some replies I have seen have sparked something in me - Why do people feel the need to post a reply saying that they wouldn't do this cake. Obviously the person who asked for ideas is willing to do the cake and she wants ideas. Why waste your time saying, Yuck i wouldn't do that. It's rude. Basically the old saying, "If you have nothing nice to say, say nothing at all". I am someone that finds "potty" humor funny but I respect people's opinions that don't find it funny. But it is rude to tell someone not to do a cake. As long as the mom-to-be isn't offended by the cake idea then it shouldn't matter to anyone else. It's her special "baby" day. It's possible to make the cake creative without being gross.
As far as ideas go. I can't really think of a good way to do it by sculpting cake but you could make it out of fondant and have it on a sheet cake made to look like a changing table with wipes, powder and other baby items on it. And whatever brown stuff you want to use in the diaper.
I agree with lish1904. Keep this post from being locked by answering the question asked. ONLY! The author didn't ask for opinions on the "taste" of the cake.
Oh, I see how this forum is run. One must never interject an opinion, and always be politically correct.

Why give a negative opinion when someone asked for help. She didn't ask what people thought of her making the cake or if she should do the cake. She wants to do the cake and all she wanted was advice on how to do it. And what does political correctness have to do with giving an opinion on a cake.

Oh that is a cute idea and it still allows those with queasy stomachs to eat the cake!! But still gets the dirt diaper in there!
Wow - though I had heard it all!!
Ok - how about making the board look like a changing mat, and a couple of baby toys lying around, like you just lifted baby straight outta the mess? Maybe a nice 'cute' box of baby wipes with one pulled halfway out. With any luck, the extra details could make this one heck of a cake! I'm a mum of 3. Thankfully way past nappy stage. But I can tell you out of my group of friends, some would go yuck, others would be in stitches, and I wouldn't judge any of them for it! But either way, the more realistic it is the better, and people will still go 'ooh ahh is that thing REAL??' And in my experience, being known to be open minded is one thing that has got me a lot of orders. Have fun!

I agree, i love this idea! It could be so adorable with all those little details.

I vote for this idea also! It keeps the theme of what the customer is asking for and still keeps it PALETTABLE (sp?) HTH!!!
PLEASE LADIES, lets play nice!
