Has anyone ever used Dream Whip frosting? What is the consistancy and what recipe did you use. Thanks!
I've tried and liked the Dreamy Cream:

I saw this frosting but that is not what I was looking for. I am looking for a frosting that is similar to whipped cream frosting like you get on store bought cakes. Thanks though.
Lisa,
I think u may want a stabilized whip cream icing. Here is a recipe http://www.cakecentral.com/cake_recipe-1925-1-Stabilized-Whipped-Cream.html
heres another:

o ok you are talking about "Rich's Bettercream" frosting. It is premade and hard to replicate. Some people have said that they can get that at "sam's" or costco. You might try there for that.
I called Sam's and Costco here. Costco no longer has it. Sam's says that you need to order it at least a week in advance and I need it by Sunday. I tried all the local grocery stores too and no luck. I wanted Bettercream but am now looking for a good substitute. So any suggestions would be awesome.
Smart & Final sells PastryPride which is a whipped cream frosting. I also bought a chocolate Bettercreme there last week.

Have you tried calling the local restuarant supplier and see if they have the rich's bettercream in the blue can (you have to whip it up yourself)
Lisa if you have time, you may want to try the stabilized whipped cream. I had some of the bettercream and it had kinda an aftertaste to me. I do use pastry pride quite often though. I love it. I have never iced a cake with it, because it didn't seem like I could get it smooth, but I did learn that I was whipping it to much.
Wilton makes a box of whipped icing mix. You may want to try that. It's expensive to me, approximately $5.00 a box.
I've used the recipe using butter, crisco, and regular sugar, then I made the pudding/cream recipe and folded them together.
Pretty expensive, but it was good.
Here is the thing, I need to do this cake for a birthday party on Sunday so I can't contact the rresteraunt suppliers. I have heard that Bettercreme has a funny after taste. I talked to a local grocery store and the baker there told me how they make their whipped creme frosting and I love it personally. It is very light and not too sweet. It is a little sweeter than coolwhip but almost as light. She said they just use buttercream and add whipping creme til they get the consistancy they want. They use it for piping and icing but can not make flowers with it. Since I am doing this cake for a little boys birthday and he wants a Superman, I guess that is what I would want to do. I was thinking of using BC for the superman since he needs to be colorful and I have heard whipped cream frosting does not color the greatest. I know it will have to be refridgerated but I am not too worried about it getting too hot because it has been in the 30's here and the party is at a fitness club so it will be cool. I guess I shouldn't have told them I could do it on such short notice but I can't say no to little kids, ya know?
ummm that sounds really good. buttercream adding whipping cream... oh yea u make me want to practice
Adding whipping cream to buttercream is pretty much what I did. Only I added sugar free white chocolate pudding to my cream before I whipped it.
Anyway, be careful about colorful buttercream on the whipped topping....it might bleed into the whipped part. Mine did when it came to room temp.
If at all possible, try to do the decorating with the same whipped stuff you use on the cake. Maybe save some out before it gets too lite when you're adding the cream?
Just a suggestion....please share with us your results! I'm hoping someone figures out a good recipe for this! I've not found one yet that I'm thrilled with and don't want to have to buy a ready-made product.
Good luck!
Thanks everybody and thanks for the tip Sunlover. I am going to make the frosting here soon and I will do what you said. I would rather not use store bought too because I don't like the taste of it myself but I guess if someone requests it, I will do it.
Ok, for those that were following my saga, I got the cake done. What I did for the frosting was use the buttercream that I use all the time that is cream cheese, Crisco, CSugar, and added heavy whipping cream instead of water. Then I took some out and put it aside and to the remaining frosting I added dream whip that I made in a seperate bowl. It taste GREAT. It is very soft so I couldn"t pipe with it so I used the buttercream I had set aside for that and to make a FBCT for the cake. I couldn't get it very smooth but I still think it turned out pretty good. It has pineapple filling too so it is pretty tasty. Thanks everyone for the help. The pic is in my files, it is the Superman.
