You can try making your own, but I would try some store bought first. I use a brand called Satin Ice, vanilla. It tastes good to me and my customers.
You can get the feel of it and make a decision.
Any site carrys fondant or go to a local cake retail shop.
Good Luck

"... fondant virgin...." I love it icon_lol.gificon_lol.gif

I started with the Wilton fondant ready-to-use in the box. I still use it and just add flavoring to it. You can find it at Walmart. I don't eat it but everyone on here says it's bad. My husband said it wasn't bad tasting just sorta chewy. I recently tried SatinIce brand fondant. It's more pricey than Wilton's but seemed much more pliable! Pettinice fondant is also easy to use. Never tried MMF.

To start with, I recommend using the pre-made fondant in a box. Not sure if I can say the "W" word or not. I've used it and it was a lot of fun. I have not made fondant yet but plan too in the short future. The box stuff, IMHO, does not have a good flavor. Home-made has a creamier texture and a lot smoother, taste-wise. But for experimenting, I recommend the pre-made box variety. You can mess with it a lot quicker. Hoe-made takes about 24 to get to the "play" stage.

Hope it helps,
Joe

I used the Pettinuce once and it did not hold up in humidity.

Bellina tastes better...if possible. It also lasts a lot longer.

If you have never used fondant I recommend purchasing some first so that you know how it feels before trying to make MMF. I personally hate making MMF. I just want to get to the fun stuff so I purchase mine. I have used Wilton and Pettinice. Wilton doesn't taste good but people say to add flavoring to it as it doesn't have any flavor. Pettinice tastes wonderful and I've also hear Satin ice does too. Good luck, I think you'll decorating with fondant!
