Strange Wedding Cake Request, Can Anyone See The Details?
Decorating By beccakelly Updated 1 Jun 2008 , 7:23pm by chedeh
i just got a bride who's interested in this cake. she emailed me a kinda small file of hte pic, so its hard to see the details. can anyone tell what the heck the cats, skeletons and skulls are made out of? do you think they're chocolate molds? the pumpkins look flat to me, like maybe they're RI pieces, with BC vines and leaves?
thanks! i seem to be doing this a lot lately, sorry!!!
Wow, lots going on there! I can't tell much either, sorry! The pumpkins do look flat. I'm sure you can find pumpkin molds and use those. I am not sure about the skeltons either. They almost look "pre-fab", not piped. Maybe a transfer or edible image? I like the cats and skulls, but your right, it's hard to see. Maybe you can improvise with what you know or what you can find available. Like I said, there's a lot going on, you could really do something cute - make it your own!
The cats, skeletons, and pumpkins all look like those store bought sugar decorations that are like hard pressed sugar that the design is airbrushed on. You could totally make them yourself with royal icing instead, just do flat ones, but thats what they look like to me.

Those skeletons look a bit like the ones that came with Wilton's Halloween 5 Candy Mold Mega Pack I just picked up in Joann's.

That's what I thought, too. I would see if you can find candy/chocolate molds and make an attempt at sugar molding (think sugar-molded panorama Easter eggs) or chocolate molding. I suspect the skeletons may be chocolate molds, too, with white chocolate.
Looks like a fun challenge piece, nonetheless. Good Luck!

Could any of the decorations be inedible, like plastic spiders? If so, maybe the skeletons on the sides of the top tier may be little rubber/plastic skeletons. I have seen things like that in Target in the Halloween handouts area. (As an alternative to candy or as party favors.)
I agree. I t looks like the cat, pumpkins and spiders are commercially made out of inedible material.
Eeeek! Are you sure you want to put your name on a design like that? I recently turned down a bride that wanted a "duck hunting" wedding cake; complete with camo and decoy topper.
The skeletons on the top tier look like they could be made out of royal icing...and the other little guys like the pumpkins and skull heads look like either chocolate or candy molds.
Honestly, I bet if you do the decorations your own way it will look just as cool! Looks like it will be a fun cake to do.
Nothing says love like skeletons. Good luck on this cake and please repost when you have a picture of your cake.

LOL, it does make me wonder!! i don't know for sure if she'll book with me, but i wanted an idea of what to quote her based on what the heck those decorations were made of! choc molds would be a pain for me to do (i never have molds or choc on hand) but buying them would be easy. i sent her a quote and we'll see what she says! she said she's only having 38 people at the wedding, so i told her we could do just the top two tiers, for 44 servings, and i quoted her $130. she wants it for Oct 27th, and just emailed me about it today!! what the heck are people thinking putting the cake off till 3 weeks before??? good thing im free. i wonder if she's been turned down by every other caker in the area because of hte late notice!
I see alot of stuff like this on Day of the Dead holiday sites. They even have skeleton wedding toppers too. Just google day of the dead.
I agree it should be alot of fun. Good luck!

I think it's a cool cake. It's something different for a cake decorator's portfolio. Just because you (the proverbial you) don't like something that somebody wants, doesn't make it bad
Embracing all opportunities to create is a blessing. Some people here would love to do a wedding cake for somebody.
No disrespect intended, I just wanted to give the opposing view because it's what I believe
As for the details of the cake. I think using molds would work nicely.

I am doing a wedding cake this weekend that is camo and orange. I am VERY excited about this cake. Saying that You will not do a cake because of the "duck hunting" theme! Thats crazy! I am always open to new things! Its the brides day not mine!
