Has anyone baked a cake in food (tin) cans? I'm attempting to make a candle cake just for fun because I think they are so cool. I only filled the cans up 1/2 way with the batter because I was worried about them running over. Well they still did. icon_cry.gif My oven is a mess now! I was able to cut the tops off of them & they look ok but the largest one didn't bake all the way & it's crooked! LOL! I put it back in the oven for a few minutes but it got this well in it. Looks funny! I hope I can salvage it with icing & fondant thumbs_up.gif Any help will be appreciated!! What did I do wrong? I hate disasters!!

A bit late now, but I put them on a baking sheet lined with foil for easy cleanup. It is hard to judge how they will bake. I try to fill the can only 1/2 full, lower the temp and bake them a bit longer. I haven't tried it, but I wonder if a flower nail would help them bake better.

it looks like you will be able to salvage what you have. Candle cakes sound very cute for the holidays.

How do you put the flower nail in? Sharp point down? How far? Does it come out easily?

I would put the nail, pointing up, in the bottom of the can, and add the batter. Usually, you remove the bottom of the can to release the cake. you would see the flat head of the nail, so you could pull it out easily.

You could also cut a small round of parchment, pierce it with the nail, and put that in the bottom. It would help to distribute the heat a little better, and cook the inside of the cake more quickly.

If you have to use a flower nail for the larger size then you should grease it the same as you would your pan (can in this case) and put it flat side down. It comes out easy enough after the cake cools slightly. I used a #7 nail and I guess I really didn't notice much difference in the baking time. It seemed to take just as long.

Thanks Ya'll! I didn't think to use a flower nail. I knew I should have put a cookie sheet with tinfoil under the cans. I guess I was in a rush. By the way I didn't salvage the cakes.. son ate them! That's another disaster story! LOL icon_smile.gif My neighbor was coming over to my house, fell into the water meter box thingy & broke a pipe! So during the baking of these cakes we had to turn the water off & fix water pipes. Not fun baking without water. LOL~

7yyrt I knew there was a thread about soup cans but I couldn't find it! Thanks so much!! I might try again tonight~ I'll let ya'll know how they come out.

Thanks again!

I would be collaring and lining the tin before putting the batter in it and would only fill to half. You can get nut loaf tins here in Australia. I have made a candle cake ans sent it to England for Christmas a long time ago.

I hope I can do them all! Good thing that candles can be done anytime icon_smile.gif But I really want to do them for Christmas. I'm baking ornmants (ball pan) now (hopefully I'll have better luck today then last night.. I'll TRY the candles again tonight.
