Hi! I will be making a doll cake for my daughters birthday and i have some questions to ask coz i am having difficulty in smoothing my icing. How do you smooth your icing specially in doll cakes when using buttercream? I also want to ask is there a step by step instruction on how to do this? I am also having trouble icing the doll's top. I have a Wilton Doll mold but when it comes to icing the cake its really a disaster. really need your help. thanks!

i've attached my first doll cake and its not pretty coz i had difficulty in smoothing the icing... Should i make a crumb coat before icing the doll cake? i really dont know what to do... icon_sad.gificon_cry.gif

I THINK YOU DID A GREAT JOB....THE LINES LOOK LIKE THEY ARE PART OF THE SKIRTING.....THERE ARE A COUPLE OF METHODS THAT YOU CAN USE.....CHECK THE FORUM FOR THE MELVIRA METHOD OR THE VIVA PAPER TOWEL METHOD.......

THE DOLL CAKES ARE FUN TO DO....YOU CAN REALLY GET CREATIVE .......
KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK.

I agree that your cake looks really good! Like terrylee suggested the viva method is great for doll cakes. I have used smooth paper towels and even textured ones for the skirts. As far as making a top - I really have had better luck with making the tops out of fondant, even if the skirt itself is buttercream. You can do a lot more with it. Check out my pics if you want to see some examples, I have done quite a few dolls.

Hi,
I think your first doll looks really good! When I make a doll cake, I use a crusting buttercream and smooth with a paper towel. Maybe someone else could help with finding a link to more info on the "paper towel" method. As for the bodice, I found it way easier to just use fondant. You can mold it onto her body much easier and cut straps or sleeves or whatever you want.

How do i crust a BC icing? Do I have to place it in the refrigerator? Coz Here in our country the weather is really hot, around 28 to 30 degrees, so i really have to use a BC icing that will last for the whole day esp if the party will be held in outside. Thanks!
