I am considering working in a shop that makes custom cakes, cookies and molded chocolates. I was just wondering what kind of wage should I be expecting? What is the going salary where you are?
TIA Maria

Based on my personal experience, I started out with working part-time doing cakes at home at night time. I also work regular full-time job during the day time, just to support my family and health insurance for all of us. I know I cannot live on a salary as a cake decorator because I have not yet build up a client list yet ~and~ I want to save money for opening a bakery shop outside of my home. I need the money for commericial fridge, oven, supplies, and more. I also need money for marketing as well.

Wedding cake can run between $200 to $300 per cake, depending on how many people, tiers, location, type of cake, etc. You do the calculation on how many cakes you need to make a living on. For example, three wedding cakes X $200 equal $600. That doesn't mean you pocketed the whole $600. You will need to pay taxes, business insurance, supplies and goods, etc.

I would suggest you to start out with SMALL, then gradually build up more slowly. I enjoys decorating cakes more than making money.

Good luck and happy baking
